TODAY’S STARTING PITCHER ELIESER HERNANDEZ • Elieser Hernandez will make his second start of the season today after 4.1 strong innings in the first half of a doubleheader against Baltimore last Wednesday. He was 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA (74.2/38) and 78 strikeouts in 15 starts in 2019.

• Hernandez finished 2019 in the starting rotation beginning July 28, making 10 starts. He posted a 4.88 ERA (48.0/26) with 46 strikeouts in that time.

• Not only has Hernandez never faced the Toronto Blue Jays in spring or the regular season, in CAREER PITCHING

108 games in the minor leagues he never faced a Blue Jays affiliate.

MARLINS MINUTE Following an off day yesterday, the Miami Marlins will take on the Toronto Blue Jays tonight in the first of two games at Sahlen Field. Miami will send right-hander Elieser Hernandez to the mound for his second start of the year. He is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 2020. Miami will play Toronto four times this season in a pair of two-game sets. Toronto will head to Miami on September 1.

• Miami has not played in Toronto since June 10, 2015. That will not change this season with Toronto calling Buffalo, New York home for the 2020 season.

• Miami has not won a game on the road against Toronto since 2009. The Marlins were swept in 2015. However, the Marlins are 10-5 all-time on the road against the Blue Jays and have won four out of five series.

• Miami set a new club record with a 5-0 start to August before the loss on Saturday. With a win today, the Marlins can start August 6-2, a feat the club accomplished in 1995, 1997 and 2000. The 1995 Marlins started 4-2 and won six straight to get to 10-2.

SUNDAY RECAP Miami lost a series for the first time in 2020, falling 4-2 to the Mets. Jesus Aguilar hit his fourth homer of the season in the fifth inning for the Marlins only runs. Pablo López worked five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs. Miami was able to knock Mets starter Jacob deGrom out of the game after just five innings, but lacked timely hitting in the loss, stranding 10 runners on base.

ROAD WARRIORS Today is the 22nd consecutive day the Marlins have spent away from Miami since leaving for two exhibition games in Atlanta on July 21, inlcuding eight days quarentined in their hotel in Philadelphia. They will finally return home after tomorrow’s game after spending 23 days in a row on the road.

HEADED BACK TO BUFFALO With Toronto using Sahlen Field as its 2020 home, four Marlins will make a short return to Buffalo after playing for the Blue Jays Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bison during their minor league careers.

• Jon Berti played in 113 games for Buffalo from 2015-18, hitting .212 with six home runs and 36 RBIs.

• Justin Shafer pitched in 60 games for the Bison from 2017-19, going 3-5 with a 2.34 ERA in 73.0 innings with 71 strikeouts.

• Richard Bleier pitched in one game for Buffalo in 2014. He worked 2.0 innings, allowing one run and striking out a pair.

• Pat Venditte made a stop in Buffalo in 2016. He pitched in 25 games, including two starts. He finished with a 2-1 record and a 4.37 ERA in 35.0 innings, striking out 52.

STRONG PIPELINE MLBPipeline.com released its Midseason Top 100 Prospects today with six Marlins making the list. Miami is tied with San Diego for most players in the top 100. RHP Sixto Sanchez (24), OF JJ Bleday (30), RHP Max Meyer (42), INF Jazz Chisholm (74), OF Jesus Sanchez (90) and RHP Edward Cabrera (96) were the Marlins group recognized by MLBPipeline.com. Miami had five players in the top 100 at the beginning of 2020 but have added 2020 first round draft pick Max Meyer to the list. All six players are currently at the Marlins alternate site in Jupiter.

A LOT OF MOVEMENT Miami has made 58 roster moves since the season began on July 24, including at least one transaction a day for the last 10 days before Sunday. The Marlins currently have 20 players on the Injured List and only have 13 players on the active roster who were on it on Opening Day.

• INF/OF Jonathan Villar, INF/OF Jon Berti, INF Brian Anderson, OF Corey Dickerson, INF Jesús Aguilar, C Francisco Cervelli, OF Magneuris Sierra, RHP Brad Boxberger, RHP Brandon Kintzler, LHP Stephen Tarpley, RHP Pablo López, RHP Sterling Sharp, and RHP Elieser Hernandez were on the Opening Day roster and remain on it today.

• Saturday, RHP Humberto Mejía was optioned to the Alternate Training Site and LHP Richard Bleier was placed on the 10-day Injured List (left triceps strain). LHP Brian Moran was recalled and SHP Pat Venditte had his contract selected.

ALLOW US TO INTRODUCE OURSELVES Saturday’s starting pitcher Daniel Castano was the ninth Marlin to make his Major League debut this season. He joined RHP Nick Neidert and LHP Alex Vesia from July 25 in Philadelphia, RHP Jordan Holloway from July 26 in Philadelphia, OF Monte Harrison from August 4 in Balitmore, RHP Sterling Sharp and INF Eddy Alvarez from August 5 in Baltimore, RHP Jorge Guzman from August 6 in Baltimore and Humberto Mejía from August 7 in New York.

• The Marlins do not have any more players on the active roster awaiting their Major League debuts for the first time this season.

• According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last teams to have nine MLB debuts in their first nine games of a season were the Philadelphia Athletics (10) and Pittsburgh Pirates (9), both in 1954.

• Houston has also had eight players make their MLB debuts in its first eight games, but According to Elias Sports Bureau before 2020 no team since the 1955 Washington Senators had eight players make their MLB debuts in the first eight games of a season.

A SPRINT AND AN OPPORTUNITY With a 60-game season, Miami is in a unique position to compete for an NL East title. This is the latest (August 11) the Marlins have held a share of first place in their division. Before this season, the Marlins had never spent a day in first place after June 27 in any season in franchise history. The 2004 Marlins were in first place with a 40-35 record, but finished the season in third in the NL East at 83-79. Last season, Miami was 39-63, in fifth place in the division and 21.5 games out of first place with 60 games remaining. The 2016 Marlins had the best 102-game start to a season with a 55-47 record, good for second place, five game back of first. They finished the season 79-82 and in third.

• Miami has held a share of first place for every day of the 2020 season so far.

• Acquired by Miami from Houston in the Major League phase of Rule 5 Draft on December 12, 2014. One of two Rule 5 pitchers on the roster, joining 2019 selection RHP Sterling Sharp.
