Miami Dade Water and Sewer Department wins award

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the fiscal year that concluded on September 30, 2020.

WASD has received the GFOA Certificate of Achievement Award for 38 consecutive years.

“The recognition we have received from GFOA for nearly four decades is a testament to our department’s commitment to not only providing reliable water and sewer services to our 2.3 million customers daily, but to our duty to also be responsible financial stewards of our rate payers’ monies,” said WASD Director Roy Coley. “We remain committed to transparency and meeting the high standards set by the GFOA. I would like to commend WASD’s Controller Division and the Office of Public Engagement’s staffs for their tireless efforts in preparing this report each year.”

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment.

“I am extremely proud of the work that our WASD team does to provide excellent services and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Our public servants work hard to earn the trust of our community and I thank WASD for setting such a strong example of transparency and accountability for the last nearly 40 years.”

The annual financial report was rigorously judged by an impartial panel whose criteria included demonstrating a constructive “spirit of disclosure” to clearly communicate financial stories. The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association comprising approximately 17,500 government finance professionals.
