Miami Dade receives LEED Certification and Citizens Independent Trust has a new member

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava got together with Office of Resilience staff to celebrate the LEED Gold Certification for Communities by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) at the Stephen P. Clark Building. Miami-Dade County is one of 15 communities nationwide to earn the Leed Gold for Communities Certification this year.

In order to achieve LEED Gold Certification for Communities, the county was scored in accordance with rigorous guidelines set forth by the USGBC. LEED certification candidates must verify the implementation of sustainable and resilience practices aimed at improving sustainability and the standard of living for residents.

The Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) has a new member, Ernie R. Thomas, who will represent Miami-Dade County Commission District 10 on the CITT.

Thomas currently is the managing partner at a private family investment fund that focuses on agribusiness, early-stage life science, healthcare technologies and real estate. He is also the current President of Horse Country Miami, a not-for-profit organization that preserves and protects agricultural/equestrian land in Miami-Dade County.

Prior to that, Thomas co-founded and sold two life science and medical diagnostic companies to Danaher/Beckman Coulter, where he took the role of Director of Scientific Affairs and Director of the Biomedical Research Business Center.

Thomas holds a Master of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Florida International University (FIU). In addition, Thomas has served on several boards, including the Board for the Miami-Dade International Trade Consortium. He also served as a mentor for Mini I-Corps Program at FIU.

“I am humbled to be asked to serve on the CITT. It is a great responsibility to look after these Surtax funds and I look forward to making a positive impact on the transportation needs of Miami-Dade County,” Thomas said.

CITT Executive Director Javier A. Betancourt said he is grateful to have a new member representing District 10 and looks forward to working with Thomas in improving transportation in Miami-Dade County.
