Miami Dade offers meals and books

Miami Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD), through its Head Start Division and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), provides healthy fare for the body and mind. Children participating in the SFSP at designated sites throughout the county will receive nutritious meals and books to fortify their minds. Free books will be distributed at Centro Campesino, 35801 SW 186 Avenue in Florida City this Friday, July 29th at 2:30 PM.

Centro Campesino is one of five sites this summer where children can receive free nutritious meals and books. This is the second year that free books are being distributed in conjunction with the Summer Food Service Program. For this initiative, CAHSD has partnered with The Children’s Trust and Miami Dade College’s Book Fair.

“The goal is to get more books in the hands of children who need them the most – magical, world-building, life-changing books that they can keep reading with their families over and over again,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. SFSP is a federally funded food program, which serves free nutritious meals to youth 18 years old and under during the summer.

In addition to Centro Campesino, the following sites throughout Miami-Dade County will distribute free books to children attending SFSP programs: Goodlet Park (Hialeah), Doral Glades Park (Doral), Beacon Hill (Miami Gardens), and Cordoba Courts (Opa Locka).

“It’s gratifying to be able to offer children in our community places to receive healthy meals and keep their minds engaged with wonderful books while they are out of school for the summer,” said CAHSD Director, Sonia Grice.
