BIRMINGHAM – Behind a pair of first half goals, Memphis was able to hold off UAB 2-1 on Sunday night at PNC Field.
The Blazers (2-1-1) got its lone goal from Stella Kiss in the 90th minute. The score was set up by a Jessica Wheeler corner kick that Sidney McGregor tapped to Kiss for the goal.
In net, Anika Toth and Eve Beyer split time, with Toth turning away a pair of shots.
“We learned tonight that you can’t show up for 45 minutes and not compete against a team that went to the second round of the NCAA tournament last year,” said head coach Erica Demers.
“In the second half, we took back far more control simply by competing and winning individual battles. We regained momentum for a good spell and the stats reflected that. There were a lot of positives in that second period and we created opportunities to add to the one goal we eventually did get.”
After getting outshot 7-1 in the first half, the Blazers defense clamped down holding Memphis to just one shot in the second half.
“I wish we could have started the game the way we ended it, but our young team took a huge step forward tonight in that second half, so I’m really proud of that,” added Demers.
Up next, the Blazers travel to the Copper State to face Arizona State on Sept. 1 and Arizona on Sept. 4. The next home match is Sept. 8 against Samford.
