McCaffrey Becomes Highest-Paid Running Back In NFL History

By Damon Knight, Tribune Correspondent

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers and running back Christian McCaffrey agreed to terms on a four-year, $64 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott is the second-highest with $15 million per season. The Jets’ Le’ Veon Bell is third with $14.1 million per year.

“I’m so excited to continue my career in Carolina,” McCaffrey said. “I want to thank [owner David] Tepper, [general manager] Marty Hurney, and Coach [Matt] Rhule for the opportunity to help lead this great franchise, and to all my teammates for their help along the way. And to Panthers fans, KEEP POUNDING!”

McCaffrey, 23, rushed for 2,392 yards in 2019, compiling 19 touchdowns in 16 games for the Panthers last seasons. However, the team struggled as a whole and finished the season with a 5-11 record. The team also fired its coach Ron Rivera late in the season and hired Matt Rhule this season to replace him. During a recent conference, Rhule got asked about the details of McCaffrey’s contract and instead praised his talent by saying, “I think Christian McCaffrey is a centerpiece player that you can build around,” Rhule said. “And I think he really builds to the culture that you want to have within the building.”

During the beginning of the global pandemic known as, COVID-19, McCaffrey announced the launch of his “22 and You” to support the frontline healthcare heroes in the Carolinas. McCaffrey said, “Like all of you, I have been watching the COVID-19 public health emergency unfold with shock and sadness. I am moved by the heroic and selfless efforts of our frontline healthcare providers throughout the Carolinas and beyond. As such, I have decided to launch an effort to help them in their life-saving work.

I have created a program called “22 and You” to raise much needed funds for our healthcare heroes. My partners at Lowe’s Home Improvement and Bose have stepped up and donated to the program. We will be directing the monies raised to NC Healthcare Foundation and South Carolina Hospital Association Foundation.

I am personally matching the commitment these great companies and encourage people to donate whatever you can:” $20, $220, or $2,000.

  Thank you, Christian
