MBB: USF Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime to Wichita State

TAMPA, FLA., DEC. 22, 2020 (AP) – Tyson Etienne scored 25 points and Wichita State never trailed in overtime to beat South Florida 82-77 on Tuesday night.

The Shockers (4-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) scored first in the extra period on a layup from Craig Porter Jr. with 3:46 remaining and never gave up the advantage.

Clarence Jackson had 10 points and seven rebounds for Wichita State. Alterique Gilbert added 10 points. Trey Wade had seven rebounds. Etienne made 10 of 12 free throws and added six rebounds.

David Collins (Youngstown, Ohio) had 17 points for South Florida (5-3, 1-1), which had its four-game win streak snapped. Collins hit two of three foul shots with under a second remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Caleb Murphy (Youngstown, Ohio) added 14 points and six assists for the Bulls. Justin Brown (Atlanta) had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Alexis Yetna (Paris) finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double.

USF held Wichita State to 27.6 percent in the first half and led by 13 points before the Shockers closed the first half on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to seven at halftime. Wichita State then scored the first two baskets of the second half to pull within three after a layup by Dexter Dennis.

The Bulls pushed their lead back to nine minutes later on a jumper by Xavier Castaneda (Chicago), but Wichita State continued to chip away and eventually took the lead with 7:37 remaining on a jump shot by Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler.

USF trailed by six points with 33 seconds before forcing overtime on Collins’ free throws in the final second.

• David Collins made 10 free throws and has now made the second-most in AAC history with 450.     
• USF held its sixth opponent of the season under 30 percent from three-point range.       
• Michael Durr finished with a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with eight points.
