May, Davis & Martin Earn All-District Honors

KANSAS CITY – The National Association of Basketball Coaches released its all-district teams and award winners on Tuesday. After a historic season which has put the Owls in the NCAA Tournament, Florida Atlantic’s Dusty May was named NABC All-District 17 Coach of the Year. Johnell Davis landed on the All-District First Team, while Alijah Martin was named as All-District Second Team.

Florida Atlantic has qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship Tournament for only the second time in school history after a 31-3 season in which the Owls captured the Conference USA Championship. The ninth-seeded Owls will square off against the eighth-seeded Memphis Tigers on Friday, March 17 in Columbus. Tip time is 9:20 p.m. eastern, and the game can be seen on TNT.

Dusty May, Coach of the YearMay earns his second Coach of the Year honor after already being named C-USA Coach of the Year. May has led the Owls to new heights with a record-breaking season, which is by far the best season in FAU history. The Owls have set the school record for wins (31) longest winning streak, (20) home wins, (17) highest national ranking, (19) and the C-USA record for conference wins (18), among several others. After being selected to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason poll, the Owls dominated from start to finish on their way to the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002.

The Owls captured both C-USA titles, with the regular season championship in addition to the tournament championship, which are both program-firsts in the Owls’ 10-year history as a member of the conference.

Johnell Davis, All-District First TeamDavis adds another award after his outstanding sophomore campaign. The Gary, Ind. native is also the C-USA Sixth Player of the Year as well as a  First Team All-C-USA honoree. He is the Owls’ leading scorer with an average of 13.5 points per game and is shooting an even 50% from the field (152-304) and 39.3% from 3-point range. Davis has scored in double figures in 22 of the 32 games he has played in. For his efforts, he was also named to the All-C-USA Tournament team after averaging 16.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Alijah Martin, All-District Second Team
Martin earns another honor after a terrific at sophomore season. He was additionally an All-C-USA First Team honoree and the Most Valuable Player the C-USA Tournament. In the C-USA Championship Game, Martin exploded for a season-high 30 points and made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. Over the three games in the tourney, Martin averaged 16 points and eight boards per game.

On the season, Martin is averaging 13.2 points per game to rank second on the team and 5.4 boards per game, also second on the squad.
