Club extends home unbeaten streak to four;
Lowe nets first Inter Miami goal;
Campana scores seventh of the year, Mota registers first assist for team
MIAMI (May 14, 2022) – Inter Miami CF earned a 2-2 draw with D.C. United at DRV PNK Stadium. Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana scored his seventh goal in all competitions this season, while defender Damion Lowe scored his first MLS goal, to extend the club’s unbeaten home streak to four.
“There was lots I was really pleased with considering our feelings after the game on Tuesday. I thought we’ve controlled most of the game, just two lapses of concentration,” said head coach Phil Neville. “The disappointment is that we didn’t get the victory we thought we deserved, and that hurts a little bit because we thought our performance deserved that.”
Inter Miami opened the match with a starting XI featuring a number of changes following the team’s midweek U.S. Open Cup win over South Georgia Tormenta FC. Drake Callender once again started in goal; DeAndre Yedlin, Lowe, Chris McVey, and Kieran Gibbs formed the backline; Gregore, Jean Mota, and Bryce Duke lined up as the midfield trio; Robert Taylor and Ariel Lassiter started on the wings alongside striker Campana.
The match marked the return of Lowe, who started against D.C. after missing Inter Miami’s last two matches, while Campana, Gibbs and Mota started after resting in the team’s midweek match. Callender, meanwhile, started his third consecutive match for the First Team, his longest such run for Inter Miami. Ryan Sailor appeared on the bench following his MLS debut in the team’s last MLS regular season match.
After a weather delay of just over an hour to start the match, Inter Miami opened proceedings with a number of ambitious counter attacks and lively dribbling. Notably, the winger duo of Taylor and Lassiter pushed forward frequently while Duke attacked through the middle.
Inter Miami was forced into a first-half substitution, with Gibbs coming off injured in the 29th minute. He was replaced by Sailor, making his second consecutive MLS appearance after starting against Charlotte FC for his MLS debut last weekend.
Two minutes later, the hosts took the lead. McVey, who moved to left back following the substitution, took on several defenders and passed to Campana in the box, who then played a one-touch ball down the left wing to Lassiter. The Costa Rican then crossed a ball into Campana, who met the ball in front of goal and flicked a shot past the keeper at the near post to open the scoring. The goal was Campana’s sixth in MLS and seventh across all competitions this season, while the assist was Lassiter’s third.
Inter Miami then doubled its lead in the 45th minute from a set piece. Mota struck a curling delivery from a corner to the center of the box, and Lowe rose up over two defenders, heading the ball off the post and into the back of the net to make it 2-0. The goal marked a pair of firsts for Inter Miami, as it was Lowe’s first goal and Mota’s first assist.
D.C. United, however, notched a goal of its own just before halftime. Julian Gressel crossed a ball into the box and Michael Estrada flicked it back to Taxiarchis Fountas, who curled it into the back of the net to halve the deficit.
Inter Miami appeared to score a third goal early in the second half when Duke played a ball to Lassiter down the left wing and the winger hit a driven low shot into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as the linesman raised his flag, judging Lassiter to be offside.
It was the visitors, though, who would score next when Fountas drove down the right wing, played a ball to Russell Canouse into the box, who then passed to Ola Kamara in front of goal. The striker connected with the pass and netted to equalize.
Inter Miami continued to push for a winner through remaining minutes, including the final moments following a red card for D.C. United’s Chris Durkin, but the 2-2 scoreline held through the final whistle.
Next for Inter Miami is a midweek MLS match on the road, with the team set to face the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

CRÓNICA: Inter Miami empata 2-2 en casa contra el D.C. United
El Club extiende su racha invicta a cuatro;

MIAMI (14 de mayo de 2022) – Inter Miami CF sumó un empate por 2-2 ante el D.C. United en el DRV PNK Stadium. El delantero ecuatoriano Leonardo Campana marcó su séptimo en todas las competencias esta temporada, mientras que el defensor Damion Lowe marcó su primer gol en la MLS, para extender la racha invicta del club en casa a cuatro.
“Hay muchas cosas de las cuales estoy complacido tomando en cuenta nuestros sentimientos luego del partido del martes. Pienso que controlamos la mayor parte del partido, solo tuvimos dos lapsos de concentración“, dijo el director técnico Phil Neville. “El disgusto viene de que no sumamos la victoria que merecíamos, y eso duele porque pensamos que nuestro rendimiento ameritaba eso”.
Inter Miami abrió el partido con un once inicial con varios cambios en relación al utilizado en la victoria en la U.S. Open Cup a media semana sobre el South Georgia Tormenta FC. Drake Callender fue titular en la portería; DeAndre Yedlin, Damion Lowe, Chris McVey y Kieran Gibbs conformaron la zaga; Gregore, Jean Mota y Bryce Dyke formaron un tridente en el centro del campo; Robert Taylor y Ariel Lassiter acompañaron por la bandas al delantero punta Leonardo Campana.
El encuentro marcó el regreso de Lowe, quien arrancó de inicio contra D.C. luego de perderse los últimos dos cotejos de Inter Miami, mientras que Campana, Gibbs y Mota fueron titulares luego de descansar en el encuentro a media semana. Por su lado, Callender formó parte del once inicial por tercer partido consecutivo con el Primer Equipo, su racha más larga con inter Miami. Ryan Sailor estuvo en el banquillo de suplentes después de su debut en la MLS en el último encuentro de temporada regular del equipo.
Luego de una demora de poco más de una hora por mal tiempo, Inter Miami inició el cotejo con varias ocasiones por medio de contraataques y jugadas individuales. Particularmente, los extremos Taylor y Lassiter presionaron en ataque mientras que Duke atacó por el centro.
Inter Miami se vió forzado a realizar una modificación en la primera parte, con Gibbs abandonando el campo de juego con una lesión en el minuto 29. Fue reemplazado por Sailor, quien realizó su segunda aparición de forma consecutiva en la MLS luego de brillar contra Charlotte FC en su debut en la MLS la semana pasada.
Dos minutos después, los anfitriones tomaron la delantera. McVey, quien fue lateral izquierdo tras la modificación, encaró a varios defensores y le pasó la pelota a Campana dentro del área, quien a un toque le puso el balón a Lassiter sobre la banda. El costarricense centró una pelota para Campana, quien controló el balón de cara a gol y batió al arquero para abrir el marcador. Fue el sexto gol para Campana en la MLS y el séptimo en todas las competencias esta temporada, mientras que la asistencia fue la tercera de Lassiter.
Inter Miami luego extendió su ventaja en el minuto 45 por medio de una jugada a balón parado. Mota envió un centro al área de un cobro de tiro de esquina, y Lowe se alzó entre dos defensores para cabecear la pelota al segundo poste para poner el 2-0 en la pizarra. El gol marcó dos primicias para Inter Miami, ya que fue el primer gol de Lowe y la primera asistencia de Mota.
Sin embargo, D.C. anotó un tanto antes del descanso. Julian Gressel envió una pelota al área y Michael Estrada la tocó hacia atrás para Taxiarchis Fountas, quien mandó la bola al fondo de la red para acortar la distancia en mitad.
Inter Miami pareció anotar su tercer tanto al inició de la segunda parte cuando Duke le cedió la pelota a Lassiter sobre el costado izquierdo y el extremo mandó un remate al fondo de la red, pero el tanto fue anulado ya que el línea alzó su banderín.
Pese a ello, fueron los visitantes quienes anotaron después cuando Fountas condujo hacia arriba sobre la banda derecha, le pasó la pelota a Robert Cannouse dentro del área, quien luego le pasó la pelota a Ola Kamara de cara a marco.
Inter Miami pareció anotar un tercer gol temprano en el segundo tiempo cuando Duke mandó una bola para Lassiter sobre la banda izquierda, pero el extremo mandó un centro a ras de césped.
Fueron los visitantes, sin embargo, quienes anotarían después cuando Fountas condujo sobre el sector derecho, que luego entregó una pelota a Russell Canouse centro del área, que se la cedió a Ola Kamara de cara a marco,. El delantero conectó con el pase y fue titular.
