First Team earns first trophy in final preseason test ahead of 2022 season;
Campana and Higuaín each score to secure victory, Yedlin and Allen assist
CHARLESTON, S.C. (February 19, 2022) –Inter Miami CF earned its first trophy tonight, winning the Breeze Airways Carolina Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Charlotte FC in the final match of the tournament. The team was led to the final result by goals from the starting forward combination of Leonardo Campana and Gonzalo Higuaín, with assists from the starting wingback duo of DeAndre Yedlin and Academy product Noah Allen. Inter Miami concluded the tournament with two wins and one draw to earn the title in its last preseason test ahead of its highly-anticipated 2022 MLS campaign.
“I’m really pleased with the preseason work that we’ve done. We still got an awful lot of work to do. We are still building every single day…The pleasing thing at the end was how all the players had a massive big smile on their faces and the enjoyment they had of winning together,” said head coach Phil Neville. “Winning breeds confidence and even though it’s a preseason tournament, I think it’s a little baby step forward for us in terms of positivity.”
Inter Miami lined up for the match with a strong starting XI for the final preseason match before the team’s home opener. Clément Diop started in goal; Yedlin, Jairo Quinteros, Damion Lowe, Christopher McVey and Allen formed the team’s defense; Jean Mota, Gregore and George Acosta started in midfield; Campana and Higuaín led the attack.
In the 25th minute, Inter Miami found its breakthrough goal. Yedlin beat his defender down the right wing and played a low cross into Campana, whose first-time shot hit the near post. The forward then latched onto the deflection and slotted his second effort into the back of the net for his first goal in Inter Miami colors and the 1-0 lead.
The second half offered much of the same, with Inter Miami doubling its lead in the 50th minute. A great team buildup saw Mota play a long switch to Allen on the left side of the box, who cut a pass back to Higuaín at the top of the box; the Argentine then met the pass in stride and struck a left-footed shot inside the near post and past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.
Higuaín’s goal proved to be the winner as Charlotte scored one of their own in stoppage time. The referee pointed to the spot for a penalty, and former Inter Miami defender Christian Makoun stepped up and scored the penalty in the 92nd minute to make it 2-1. The scoreline, however, held from there, resulting in a trophy for Inter Miami.
The match concluded an intense preseason for the team with seven total games, including the first-ever international friendly for the team at DRV PNK Stadium (a 4-0 win over Club Universitario de Deportes ), and a week in Charleston, South Carolina for the Breeze Airways Carolina Challenge Cup.
Inter Miami will now head into the MLS regular season with a trophy in hand, beginning with the team’s highly anticipated 2022 home opener. The new season will kick off at DRV PNK Stadium next Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. ET when Inter Miami takes on Chicago Fire FC.

El equipo fue conducido al triunfo por goles de los delanteros titulares Leonardo Campana y Gonzalo Higuaín, con asistencias de los laterales que arrancaron de inicio, DeAndre Yedlin y el jugador producto de la Academia Noah Allen. Inter Miami cerró su participación en el torneo con dos victorias y un empate para quedarse con el título en su última prueba de la pretemporada de cara a la altamente anticipada campaña 2022 de la MLS.
“Estoy muy satisfecho con el trabajo de pretemporada que hemos hecho. Aún tenemos mucho trabajo por delante.
