Marlins Announce Minor League Coordinators for the 2023 Season

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced the club’s Minor League coordinators for the 2023 season.

The group of returning coordinators consists of Field Coordinator Patrick Osborn; Pitching Coordinators Scott Aldred and Tommy Phelps; Senior Advisor and Hitting Coordinator Tom Slater; and Hitting and Catching Coordinator Jeff Livesey. Joining the staff in their new roles are Infield Coordinator Jorge Hernandez, International Pitching Coordinator Elvys Quezada and Esmerling De La Rosa, Angel Espada, and Frank Moore, as Player Performance Coordinators.

Aldred enters his fourth season as the Marlins Minor League Pitching Coordinator after spending 14 years in the Yankees organization. As a player, Aldred appeared in 229 games (67 starts) over nine Major League seasons with Detroit (1990-92, ’96), Colorado (1993), Montreal (1993), Minnesota (1996-97), Tampa Bay (1998-99), and Philadelphia (1999-2000).

De La Rosa joins the staff as a Player Performance Coordinator and enters his fifth season coaching in the Marlins organization. He spent the last two years as Pitching Coach with the Dominican Summer League Marlins and previously worked as a special assignment coach. De La Rosa made 227 appearances in the Minors after being signed by Miami as an International free agent in 2010. He retired after the 2018 season and owned a career 3.51 ERA (385.0 IP/150 ER).

Espada enters his 15th season with the Marlins organization, taking on the new title of Player Performance Coordinator. Espada, whose coaching tenure with the Marlins began in 2009, has worked previously as the Single-A Jupiter Manager, Latin America Field Coordinator, Dominican Summer League Marlins Manager, and as a Hitting Coach.

Hernandez joins the Minor League coordinator staff in what will be his 17th season with the Marlins organization. Hernandez previously served as the Infield Coordinator for five seasons before managing Single-A Jupiter in 2021 and High-A Beloit in 2022. A ninth-round draft selection in 1986, he has coached in different avenues through both the professional leagues and collegiate level since starting his coaching career in 2004 with the Pensacola Pelicans.

Livesey will take on a new role as the Minor League Hitting and Catching Coordinator after spending the last three seasons as Hitting Coordinator. Previously, Livesey was on the Marlins Major League staff as an Assistant Hitting Coach in 2019 and spent 16 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates after retiring as a player within the Yankees organization in 1995.

Moore enters his 14th year with the Marlins organization, becoming one of three individuals in the new role of Player Performance Coordinator. He spent as a Defensive Coach with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Moore started his coaching career as a Hitting Coach for different affiliates from 2009-14 and 2016-21 while also working as the Marlins Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator in 2015. Moore also played three seasons with Marlins’ affiliates from 2005-07.

Osborn will return as Field Coordinator for a second year and his fourth with the organization. Previously, Osborn worked as a Pro Scout during the 2020 season after coming to Miami from the New York Yankees organization. While with the Yankees, he managed at both Single-A and Double-A level, and was named the 2016 Florida State League Manager of the Year with the Charleston RiverDogs.

Phelps will enter his third year with the Marlins organization, joining Scott Aldred as a Pitching Coordinator in 2023. Prior to Miami, Phelps spent 13 seasons as a coach in the Yankees organization, and worked as a pitching coach across their Minor League affiliates from 2009-20. Phelps pitched in 75 Major League games during his professional career and won a World Series ring with the Florida Marlins in 2003.

Quezada joins the group as International Pitching Coordinator after finishing his first season in the Marlins organization in 2022 as the Jupiter Complex Pitching Coach. Prior, he served as the Pitching Coach for five seasons with the Yankees GCL team (2015-18) and as a roving pitching coach in 2019. As a player, Quezada reached Double-A in the Yankees Minor League system and combined to go 29-17 with a 3.40 ERA (441.2 IP/167 ER) in 167 appearances (48 starts).

Slater returns as Senior Advisor and Hitting Coordinator for the second consecutive year after spending four years as the Mets Assistant Hitting Coach from 2018-21. Prior, Slater worked nine seasons as a coach in the Yankees’ organization from 2009-17 and as a collegiate baseball coach for 17 years with stays at Auburn University (1995-2000 and 2005-08), the Virginia Military Institute (2001-03), and the University of Florida (2004).
