Lions vs. Panthers

By Jeremy T. Ballreich

On Friday August 25th, 2023 the Lions traveled into Carolina Panthers country, and started all back ups save 1 starter on Defense to face the Panthers.

The Goods:
The Lions surpassed 300 total yards. 17-22 passing by Teddy Bridgewater with a TD and 174 yards. Including a beautiful playaction pass 20 yards downfield where the speedy rookie Antoine Greene took it 70 total yards to paydirt to get the Lions in striking distance.

Craig Reynolds showed a serviceable 3.8 yards per carry with a TD.
Dylan Drummond keeps showing he’s good with any QB this preseason. Pretty much catching almost anything thrown his way.
Antoine Greene caught all 3 catchable passes his way for 97 yards and a TD.

The defense forced a total of 4 turnovers. With Steven Gilmore getting a pick 6 and knocking a ball loose that could have been a TD. Trevor Nowaske was the leading tackler and had a nice PBU intended for TE Trembley.

Aidan Martinez continued to show poise and maturity in the pocket.

Jack Fox punted the ball 7 times averaging 42.3 yards per punt.

The Defense gave up yards but not a lot of points or first downs. Had the Panthers with 7 of 19 in 3rd down situations

The Bads
Chase Cota, who redeemed himself in the 2nd half some, but struggled to catch passes from Bridgewater.

The Oline (All Back ups) committed 3 of the 4 penalties amassing 30 yards against the Lions.

5/16 on 3rd down conversions. This number should improve with the starters playing.

Nate Sudfeld tore his ACL in the 3rd quarter and more than likely cost him his spot, if any with the Lions.

Final Outcome
They Lions won a game on the road and showed their depth again.
