LIONS HEAD COACH DAN CAMPBELL QUOTE SHEET

On if he has heard from the League about the end of yesterday’s game:
“No, I haven’t.”
On if he saw a consistent theme with mistakes on defense when he reviewed the game film: “Listen, major communications errors and really – let’s put it this way, lack of. We have to get much more demonstrative and very clear and concise and loud and pass it along because that’s what it is. It’s not the scheme, it is the communication between players, between our backend and our linebackers that we have to clean it up. That was the errors that showed.”
On how much of the communication problems on defense have been from rotating players because of injuries: “That plays into it. There again, we’ve got a lot of babies out there and they made some young errors for sure, but they’re not the only ones. So, some of our veterans, they have to step up and they have to be much more clear and they have to be loud. That will be a major point of emphasis this week is our communication and we’re not going to allow it to go any other way. If I have to stop practice and I have to see demonstrative hand signals and screaming and everything it takes, we’re going to do it because those, we can clean all of that stuff up, but we have to.”
On the specific communication errors on the Ravens’ fourth-and-19 conversion: “A lot of it – it wasn’t so much that as it was they get into a bunch set or they hop the back and all of a sudden we’re going from a locket to now we’re boxing it or cubing it. And so one guy thinks he’s locked, one guy’s saying we’re zoning it and all of a sudden, you’ve got a corner who’s latched from the receiver when he should be off because we’re trying to zone it and it just – when those communication errors happen, all of a sudden, you get discombobulated and that’s why those things happened. It’s stuff that we’ve worked on, but there again, we’ve got to get through it. We’ve got to get through it. We’ve got to learn on the run here.”
On taking a timeout before the Ravens’ fourth-and-19 play in the fourth quarter: “What I was hoping to gain was to get everybody settled and get everybody on the same page and we did. We had everybody on the same page but one person and it hurt us. It hurt us.”
On how he spent the rest of the night after yesterday’s loss: “Look, I had my family with me. So, as much as I can, I try to cover up my poop face and try and talk to them, just try to get away from it for a minute last night. Then I went back and started watching the tape. So, I at least try to cool my head a little bit before I just start watching because I don’t want to go into it with a certain mindset. I want to try to have as, be as fresh-minded as much as possible about it. Then you just – look, you don’t sleep. That’s the nature of it. It’s hard because you’re thinking of all of these different things. It is what it is.”
On if he expects T Taylor Decker to return from injury against the Bears: “I would say as of right now, no. We don’t expect him back. I can’t totally rule him out, but I would say it would be very slim for him to be back.”
On what they can learn from past teams that have had success in late-game situations: “You’ve got to make one more play than they do and we had plenty of opportunities in the first half to make that play that we didn’t. It catches up with you in the second half. Or you just make one of those plays at the end of the game. I think that’s the big thing that, man, we’re just trying to hit home is, ‘Guys, you don’t know what play it would’ve been that would change the game and it doesn’t have to happen at the end of the game.’ For example, we got a turnover and we punt it and (Jason) Cabinda does a hell of a job knocking that ball out, we got a penalty. We just ran out of bounds and we got a simple flag just because of something like that and we get a takeaway taken away. We’d be down in the red zone with our offense and it cost us. You just don’t know when that play’s going to happen and what the difference can be and you’ve just got to continue to hit them on it. And certainly, they’ve got to remember to have a chance, you’ve got to play the way that we played yesterday with our intensity and energy. I thought our defense was much better just as far as those things go. When you play that way with that type of aggressiveness and focus and all of those things, it gives you a chance.”
On how the edge rushers performed with OLB Trey Flowers out yesterday: “I thought as a whole, this was their best game as a unit. I thought every one of those guys had a winning performance and gave us a chance. I thought Romeo (Okwara) was relentless all game long. I thought Julian (Okwara) gave us that rush that we’d been dying for from him. He gave us interior rush and did some things on the outside. Charles (Harris) and (Austin Bryant) AB both, when they came in and had their opportunities – Charles kind of played a little bit of that role, what (Trey) Flowers has done for us on some rush downs. Man, he showed up. So, I was pleased with those guys. I thought they pinned their ears back and I thought in the run they did exactly what we asked them to do. They did the game plan to a T and it showed and then when we needed them to affect the quarterback, they did that. We hit this guy, we got sacks, we got pressures, we got hits. So, I was pleased.”
On if he expects DEs Jashon Cornell and Da’Shawn Hand to play this week: “I would say Hand is still a little bit away, but certainly Cornell will be back. I don’t know if as of right now if he goes to the game per say, but I know we’re getting him back and we’re happy to have him back.”
On if he second guesses playing conservatively and running the ball three times on the final offensive drive: “I’ve said this before, I feel like you have to take each game as it comes and I loved where our defense was at. I loved the way they were playing and wanted to – man, I wanted to put it in their hands. I felt like we were going to shut them down. I wanted to give them – we knew we were going to get the field goal, I wanted to drain their timeouts and make (Ravens QB Lamar Jackson) him beat us with his arm. And look, he did that. The odds say he doesn’t and we didn’t make the play. They did, kudos to him and they made the kick. But no, I don’t second guess it.”
On T Penei Sewell’s progress from Week 1 to Week 3: “Look, there were some really good things done in the run game by him yesterday. I thought he really – you can see that he and Jonah (Jackson) are working together. He can be a road raider. Now, I would say that’s not his best performance after a three-week period. I expect more from him. I expect him to be better than he was. Now, was it bad? No, it wasn’t bad, but I hold him to high standards, too. I hold that whole group to high standards. So, I expect more. There are some things that got on the edge a little bit, but he’ll be better for it.”
On if they have made a decision whether T Penei Sewell will remain at left tackle when T Taylor Decker returns from injury: “No. We’ll wait for Decker to get back before we decide what to do with that.”
On the status of a trade for LB Jamie Collins Sr.: “We’re still working on it right now. That’s still in the works.”
