LIONS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR CORY UNDLIN CONFERENCE CALL QUOTE SHEET (VIA ZOOM)

December 21, 2020
On if the attention the Lions paid to Titans RB Derrick Henry allowed Tennessee’s play-action attack to work: “I think we stood in here last week and talked about that. Once they get that guy going, it’s the perfect recipe, right? Got to get downhill, got to get off blocks, got to show up, got to be in the right spot, can’t give this guy a crease, and then obviously then they throw one over your head. That was not part of our plan there to do that. I got a little aggressive on that call, so I put them in a little bit of a bad spot, but we didn’t execute it correctly either. So, a combination of things there.”
On where he’s at with his frustration with the defense“Yeah, we don’t ever want to give up 40 (points). Sat in here last week and told you the same thing. We were going to have to stop the run, going to have to tackle at all three levels, didn’t do it. Give up 40, not part of the plan. Don’t ever want to be in that situation. But where we are right now as a team and an organization, we’ve got to play Tom Brady, his company this week, so we’re moving on. Nothing I can do about it. Can’t dwell on it, and we’ve got to put our best foot forward here and get ready to play these guys this week. So, on to the next one.”
On if the team’s defense wasn’t properly constructed with speed: “I’m not in the business of getting into how it was constructed. What I do know is we have the guys that we’ve got, and we’re going to go forward with those guys. Whoever’s out there is going to be out there, whether they’re fast or they’re not fast. I’m not going to make any excuses on who’s out there, who can run as fast as they want or who cannot, whatever it is. I’m not playing that game. We’ve got the players that we’ve got, I love every one of them. I appreciate them. Got to do a better job coaching, got to do a better time playing.”
On the challenge of facing Buccaneers QB Tom Brady and his weapons: “We’ve got our hands full once again. It doesn’t change in this league when you play on Sunday’s – oh, in this case, playing on Saturday. But it doesn’t change. We’re going right back to work, short week obviously. Those guys are going to be back in here tomorrow, and we’re moving forward. I know regardless of what the situation is, we’re 5-9. Don’t care if we were 9-5, flip it around, however you want to mix it. I know these guys are going to show up and we’re going to do everything we possibly can to go out and play a game on Saturday. That’s what I expect. I would expect nothing less from the players either.”
