Late Goal in Double OT Lifts WKU Past UAB 1-0

BIRMINGHAM – Briana Sayoc came off the bench for WKU in the 108th minute and scored the only goal of the contest in the 109th minute as the Lady Toppers got by UAB 1-0 in double overtime on Friday night.

The Blazers had a chance to strike first in the 22nd minute when Laura Zemberyova’s cross found Lizzie Hill, but the shot was turned aside.

In the 34th minute, Lexxe Lipsey’s shot hit the crossbar. The same happened to Morgan Halliwill in the 63rd minute.

Carlyn Presley has a chance early in the 2nd half, but was stopped in the box.

With 45 seconds remaining in the 2nd overtime, Katie Erwin took a throw in and found Sayoc just outside the box. Sayoc booted the ball into the back left corner of the net for the golden goal.

UAB outshot WKU 17-15. Lipsey led all players with four. Zemberyova and Stella Kiss each had three.

Anika Toth made three saves for the Blazers.

“I have to praise our kids for everything they did today. They went exactly through the gameplan they wanted,” said head coach Erica Demers. “We hit two crossbars and we were just unlucky and unfortunately they scored in the second overtime.”

“This will be a really good recovery week for us. We’ve had a tough schedule so far and this full week will get our kids replenished again.”

After a week off, the Blazers hit the road for the next two matches, facing Southern Miss (6-2-1, 2-0-1 C-USA) on Oct. 1 and No. 24 Rice (8-2-1, 2-0-0 C-USA) on Oct. 8.

UAB returns home on Oct. 15 to host North Texas for the annual Bark in the Park night.
