Late Comeback Falls Short in UAB’s 63-58 Loss at Rice

HOUSTON – Despite outscoring Rice 22-10 in the 4th quarter, the UAB women’s basketball came up short by the score of 63-58 on Thursday night.

The Blazers (12-15, 4-14 C-USA) were led by Maria Roters with 15 points. Emily Klaczek and Denim DeShields each scored 13 for UAB. Klaczek added a career-tying eight rebounds.

The Owls’ (19-7, 10-7 C-USA) India Bellamy led all scorers with 19 points.

UAB jumped out to a quick eight-point lead in the 1st quarter, but an 8-0 Rice run tied the contest at 12-12 at 2:55. The Blazers would regain the lead on their next possession and hold it until 6:07 of the 2nd quarter. The Owls would go into halftime leading 34-25.

Rice scored the first seven points of the 3rd quarter and would build a 17-point advantage by the 1:03 mark.

A DeShields layup with 4:45 left in the 4th quarter got the Blazers in single digits at 59-50. The Owls would answer with a pair of free throws before an 8-0 UAB run made the score 61-58 with 2:33 remaining. However, the next three possessions turned up empty and Destin Jackson’s layup with 21 seconds remaining closed out the scoring.

The Blazers return home to close the regular season against WKU (Feb. 25) and Charlotte (March 4).
