KANE NAMED GEICO HORIZON LEAGUE SPRING SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE SEASON

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Olivia Kane has been named GEICO Horizon League Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Season announced by the league office on Wednesday. This marks the second consecutive season an Oakland track and field student-athlete has garnered this award as Maggie Schneider earned 2019 Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Season honors. Kane joins Alex Bashqawi from UIC who was selected on the men’s side.
 
Kane, a senior from Sparta, Mich. with a 3.96 GPA in Health Sciences, was a 2020 Horizon League Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team selection and has been a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll every semester during her career. She has won the last three consecutive Horizon League pole vault titles claiming both 2019 indoor and outdoor league championships and earlier this season at the 2020 indoor championships. Kane also recorded four other indoor top-5 finishes including first at the SVSU Classic, second at the SVSU Holiday Open and third at the Tiffin Alumni Open and SVSU Jet’s Pizza Invite.
 
In 2019, Kane broke her own pole vault school record twice clearing 13 ft., 1.5 in. to qualify for the 2019 NCAA East Preliminaries becoming the first student-athlete in program history to qualify for this event. She also earned Horizon League All-Academic Team honors.
 
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes at the conclusion of each of its three athletic seasons as the Scholar-Athlete of the Season. To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete of the Season consideration, a student-athlete must be a member of that sports current year all-academic team and is selected based on a combination of athletic and academic achievement by the League’s faculty athletics representatives.
