John Robertson Named UAB Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach Inbox

BIRMINGHAM – Head Coach Erica Demers has announced the hiring of John Robertson as UAB’s new assistant coach, working primarily with the goalkeepers.

This is Robertson’s second stint with the Blazers as he was a volunteer assistant coach during the 2018 season, helping UAB to a third place Conference USA finish.

“I couldn’t be more excited to announce the arrival of John back to our program,” said Demers. “His personality is contagious and his love and passion for the game exceed expectations. John was an integral part of our success during the 2018 season and his knowledge of the game as a whole will help our staff and program in all facets.”

Robertson spent the past year as assistant coach as part of a championship-winning campaign with NCAA DII University of Montevallo. The Falcons won the Gulf South Conference Tournament and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 after posting a 14-4-4 record.

Prior to joining the Blazers in 2018, Robertson served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at his alma mater Maryville College. Robertson helped guide the Maryville men to both USA South Conference regular season and conference tournament titles in 2016, for the first time in program history since moving to the conference four years prior.

As a player for the Fighting Scots, Robertson won three Great South Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament championships. In 2011, he was named to the Great South Atlantic All-Conference team and voted Team Defensive MVP. In his senior year, Robertson captained his side as the Scots transitioned to the USA South, and he was again an All-Conference selection, Team MVP, as well as an All-Conference Academic Team and All-Region Team scholar.

After his collegiate career ended, Robertson returned home for two years to play for Maud Juniors in the Scottish minor leagues.

Robertson earned a bachelor’s degree from Maryville in English literature with a minor in writing communications in 2013. He completed his master’s in journalism from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University.

“It is a privilege and honor to return to UAB,” said Robertson. “I had such a rewarding experience in 2018 working with Coach Erica Demers and Coach Lee Hughes. This program is definitely heading in a great direction.”

UAB hosts Columbus State on March 7 as part of the 2020 Spring season. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at BBVA Field.
