JAGUARS WR COLLIN JOHNSON POST-DRAFT SELECTION

(On his selection place in the draft and using his size to his advantage) “Yeah, this may have been a little later than I expected, as a competitor you want to get taken off the board as soon as possible, but that feeling when you get the call is unbelievable and you know the team that believed in me, I just can’t wait to go to work for them. And being with the Jaguars I’m so excited to be a part of that franchise. Oh yeah, my height. It’s definitely a benefit. I used to think the best thing for a receiver is to be tall and then due to the draft process a lot of people kind of have a knock on that, think that I’m too tall to change direction, things like that, when I know what I bring to the table. I feel like I’m in a unique situation. I know how to change direction, then drop my hips and get in and out of my breaks as a big guy. But you know by far having a ride, I’m looking forward to getting to work and just continuing to perfect my game, but I do think I bring a lot to the table and I’m excited to help the Jags win games.”

(On what he knows about Gardner Minshew II and playing with him ) “You know, I know about his stache, but honestly I don’t know much other than that, other than he’s a good quarterback and my new teammate so I’m excited to work for him. But he’s going get my best, the organization is going to get my best. I’m just looking forward to meeting my new QB and getting to work.”

(On what he will go over with Gardner Minshew II the first time he meets him) “Oh, I’ll just obviously talk with him and introduce myself and after that I just want to let him know I’m a guy that wants to learn. You know I want to know the playbook; I want to know routes he likes, what he feels comfortable with and just communicate because I think that’s just the most important thing, is being on the same page with your quarterback. So I’m the type of guy who loves to learn and go in there and pick his brain and just get better.”

(On what he feels he will bring to the team and to elevate the Jacksonville Jaguars) “I feel like I’m just very thankful that I got a shot, you know? A lot of people get into where you get drafted and yah-dee-yah-dee-yah-dee, but you know I got my opportunity and I’m excited to take it and run with it. I’m the type of guy I feel like I got all the intangibles to be a good pro, you know I’m going to show up every day early and be the last one to leave, I’m that type of guy. I’m going to make other people around me be better and go to work. So in me they get a guy that will give them his absolute best no matter what the circumstances are and I feel like that’s contagious for the team, so I’m just excited to help the team win.”

(On Matthew McConaughey’s tweet and what that meant to him) “Yeah, he’s literally the man around UT, the man around everywhere, but also around UT. You know he’s a huge Texas Longhorns fan, been around the program and on the sidelines for every game, that type of guy. So when he tweets something out its obviously incredible to get that support, and I’ve had a relationship with him for a while in terms of talking to him before and after games. He’s a huge support, you know personally and for the whole Longhorn organization.”

(On why he thinks he fell to where he did in the draft) “it’s important to understand what’s in your control and what’s not in your control and that’s what I kept repeating to myself over and over throughout the draft as days and picks were ticking and going on. But for me I feel like kind of the pandemic making this whole coronavirus going on, it didn’t give me a chance to showcase my best, I didn’t do the combine, workouts and stuff ‘cuz I had a hurt groin at the time. And I didn’t get my opportunity to have my pro day because it got cancelled, and I feel like those are opportunities to prove myself. And when teams don’t get to see that, you know that definitely hurts somebody. But I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity and the main thing is to get your foot in the door, and once I got that call I knew I had a shot and now it’s in my hands.”

(On if there was a point during the draft that he got antsy) “A little bit of both, you know the human nature kicks in and you get antsy. But I kept repeating to myself to stay positive and your time will come, but I can’t think of a specific point in the draft, but I was just happy I got the call.”

(On having a father that played defensive back in the NFL and when he could not cover him anymore) “My dad’s the type of guy that he’s a little too old to get out there and cover me, but he’s a coach, he’s more of like a mental coach for me. You know some dads are big on physical coaching, you got to step here and do this with your feet. My dad’s always been out of tune, effort calling, you know you got all the things, your athletics, you got good feet, you’re a good receiver. Just out of tune effort, control what you can control and that’s really the main thing he instilled in me since I was a kid, so I just took it and ran with it. You know I had a pretty good career at Texas and excited to take my game to the next level with the Jaguars.”

(On if he had spoken with our wide receivers coach and knew about his career in) “I spoke with him briefly at the Combine, but nothing really too long or too much, but definitely know of him and, it looks like we will be getting to know each other a lot more here soon.”

(On Jacksonville Jaguars history and past players) “Oh, I need to be caught up, I need to be caught up on all that stuff and now that I know where I’m playing, its time to dig deeper in the history and the past of the Jags because you know I’m big on history of where you play at. So I got to, definitely got to get caught up and do my homework on that front.”

(On his height and being a red zone target) “They did a little bit, they mentioned mis-matching my height with stuff and things like that, but obviously you can’t teach height. You know I’m thankful to be as tall as I am, but also I feel like a part of my game that I’m really good at is my route running, so I feel like I have more than just being a tall receiver.”

(On the criticism he gets on his speed) “I think I’m faster than people perceive me to be. I also think I can get open and at the end of the day they want you to be fast so you can get open. So as long as you can get open you see guys like Jerry Rice not running that fast, Keenan Allen, you know Jarvis Landry and you can go on and on a list of guys who figured out a way to get open and play at that extremely high level in the NFL that didn’t have blazing 40 (yard dash) times. You know, there are ways to do it, but I definitely think I’m faster than what people give me credit for.”

(On clarifying that he was at the combine, just not able to work out) “Yes sir. I was there, I got to participate in everything besides the on-field workouts.”

(On his athletic family and if there is trash talk among siblings) “Yeah, a little bit. I would like to say maybe healthy trash talk though, you know very competitive, but the end of the day we are family and we all support each other, and you know its all love with us. But it’s very competitive with us.”
