Jaguars Training Camp Transcripts

JAGUARS OC DARRELL BEVELL
THURSDAY, JULY 29, 2021

(On how QB Trevor Lawrence is looking on the field) “He is looking good. I’m really pleased with where
he is at in terms of his preparation and then being able to carry that over to the field. We will continue
to work each and every day.”
(On retention between OTA’s and Training Camp after having a break) “I actually told the whole
offensive skill guys yesterday that retention was really good for day one yesterday. You know when you
take that big break those four or five weeks, a lot of times those guys shut the books and they come
back and have a lot to dust off and look rusty. Our guys came back yesterday and it was actually a really
sharp practice for the first day so all of them have done a nice job, but even today there was a couple of
things but for the most part they were pretty dialed in.”
(On QB Trevor Lawrence and the receivers getting together at Clemson during the offseason) “You love
that stuff — for a guy like Trevor, a young guy and then he had some of the more veteran players over
there with him and there was other guys as well. You know I don’t think they always put it out there —
that’s good stuff. That’s where the camaraderie starts and that’s where you fine tune some things and
you know there is lines in a book of what we do, but there are the nuances of some of it and each guy
has different nuances so when you are able to spend that extra time you learn that. You can read body
language and you know how a guy is going to come out of a break by the way he is going into it and
that’s the stuff they’re getting done there.”
(On having depth at running back) “That’s what we need, you know I feel like this game is built that way.
I know Coach Meyer believes that — that you run the ball first and that we want to able to kind of exert
our will on the opponent. It helps us do other things in the pass game and get big plays in the pass game
— those kinds of things are what we’re looking to do. To have a number of backs back there — I think
there are a lot of guys that are looking really good and it’s just better for us.”
(On what stands out about RB James Robinson) “Well I mean first of all the guy is undrafted and you
know to come in here and watch what he did last year I think was a huge accomplishment for him. He is
kind of a quiet guy so you know it’s been kind of fun getting to know him. He is very physical and you
know love what he can do with the ball in his hands and he is going to get his fair share of doing that.”
(On the emphasis of throwing the ball to running backs out of the backfield) “I think — interesting
observation you have, that’s really good and I think the thing that’s important for us is that all of those
guys can run the ball. There are some things that are harder at each position and we want to practice
the things that are the hardest. If we can practice things that are hardest then they will get better at
them and then those things become things that they’re more comfortable with. A lot of running backs …
You know I was talking to James [RB Robinson] yesterday and was like how many catches did you have
in college and he was like hey we just ran power. They didn’t throw me the ball very much and you know

that’s just what happens and you know the more well-rounded you can make the players, the more
successful our offense has a chance to be. When you throw the ball and you got all your receivers
running down and everyone is covered, you find the running backs and we say can make you a lot of
money by taking those checkdowns. I was in Green Bay many years ago and Ahman Green was actually
the leading receiver on the team as a running back — he had 60 catches that year so we want those
guys to have all that skillset and want to work on those hard things.”
(On Head Coach Urban Meyer’s emphasis on sports performance) “Yeah I’ve never seen the level of
commitment to it as we have right now. There wasn’t much [conversations before I got here], it was
more just getting to know him and what are we going to do — how are we going to blend this thing
together in terms of the interview. Then we got here and started talking about it I mean he is committed
and you can see all the commitment out there that we have to it [sports performance].”
(On which player on offense has physically transformed the most) “I would really hate to call out one
guy. I mean if you look at these guys and it would probably be better for you guys [the media] as you
look at them because you’ve watched them for longer than I have. I mean the tight end room changed
— Ben Ellefson, [James] O’Shaughnessy those guys look great. DJ [Chark Jr.], I know that is well
documented but if I start picking guys out these guys — I really haven’t seen commitment in the
offseason as much as we had and guys were here, guys were working. They weren’t balking at anything
— they were diving head first into it. We’ve got a great sports performance team, we have a great
strength and conditioning program and I think it’s going to show out here.”
(On changing offenses based on personnel) “Well first of all it’s our offense you know it’s not mine —
the only thing I bring in right now is there has to be a starting point. I bring in the verbiage, what are we
going to call things, how are we going to line up and then kind of have a starting point on things I like to
do. The thing I need to do is get to know our players and watch them work and then put them in
positions to be successful, so what we’ve done is we kind of showed them the capabilities of the
offense. How we move guys around — we call it this way to get you here and then we’re running the
plays and but then now as we’re watching them it’s like okay now what is the best thing to do with
Laviska [Shenault Jr.]? What is the best thing to do with Marvin [Jones Jr.]? Fortunately, I’ve had two
years with Marvin. What’s the best thing to do with DJ [Chark Jr.]? [After that,] we will start moving
them around and really getting them honed in.”
(On importance of WR Marvin Jones Jr. on the roster) “It’s great to have a guy — you know a good
comfort zone for me. You know when Marv steps in the receiver room and they might have a question,
he is able to give them more of the nuances. Like I said before there are book lines but Marv can kind of
communicate that stuff — he is a great leader in there with Sanjay [Wide Receivers Coach Sanjay
Lal] but to have Marv, a guy that’s a veteran in this league that’s done some really nice things for a
younger receiver room — I mean he can help them in terms of how he takes care of his body, what his
preparation is like, help get them together for the offseason stuff you know those veteran players are
invaluable.”
(On RB Travis Etienne Jr. being impressive) “Yes, I mean yeah we’re trying to again put him in those hard
situations and you know we’re trying to make it as difficult as we can on him. Give him a lot and then
again we will kind of hone it down and get him exactly where we want him.”

JAGUARS SAFETY RAYSHAWN JENKINS
July 29, 2021

(On the competition at the safety position) “Any time you step on the field, it is competition. We have a
pretty talented group of guys ranging from all ages and everybody can play. I feel like the free safety and
strong safety position will be a battle throughout the whole camp.”
(On building continuity within the secondary) “We’re developing it right now. We developed it back in
OTA’s. It’s just something you just have to work on every day leading into the first game and carry out
throughout the season.”
(On how this training camp differs from prior years) “Well, I mean it’s way hotter than what I’ve been
used to. I’ve been out in LA; it’s not as taxing as this. The weather’s kind of fair out there. Down here,
this reminds me of my college days being back at Miami. It’s hot, so you really have to take care of
yourself, have a process, go home, take care of yourself, eat right, sleep right, and you should be okay.”
(On the conversations with coaches during practice) “It’s just the same thing that I just said, just getting
off the field, taking care of ourselves, going to get some rejuvenation, getting off our feet for a little bit,
getting ready for meetings. That’s more mental so we have to make sure that’s in order as well.”
(On having fans in attendance at today’s practice) “It’s great. Anytime the fans get to come out, I love it.
That’s part of the reason I play for. I love making the fans happy and anytime we can get fans out here,
man, that’s a great thing.”
(On Head Coach Urban Meyer’s emphasis on sports performance) “Here it’s a real focal point. I’ve been
other places. Not saying that they were bad at it, but it just wasn’t as emphasized as it is here. Here it’s
great. We have everything at our hands, anything we need just so we can kind of focus in and do what
we need to do on the field. Hats off to Coach Urban [Meyer] [for] putting a great team together for
that.”
(On the regeneration room) “It’s crazy. I’ve never even used half the stuff in there, so I’m excited to use
some of that stuff. We have a float tank. We have cryotherapy and everything. That’s something that’s
completely different here from where I used to be.”
(On if he has done any of the new sports performance therapies) “None of that. I’ve signed up. We have
to sign up and I’m just waiting my turn and I can’t wait to get in there and kind of see what it’s like.”
(On the personality of the defense this year) “We’re just kind of feeling things out. But I know one thing I
have to say, we are really competitive. That’s one thing I can see out of this group of guys. Me being
where I was before, it was competitive there. I played on some top five defenses, and it feels similar.”

(On his impression of QB Trevor Lawrence) “[He has a] strong arm. He can make all the throws that I can
see right now and he’s more mobile than I thought as well too. Guys coming off the edge on those zone
reads and stuff, you really need to be on your toes. That’s one thing I really noticed about him. He’s
more mobile than I thought he was.”
(On the comparison between QB Trevor Lawrence and Chargers QB Justin Herbert) “To me, they’re kind
of similar. They have a similar body type, length, and everything, they can make any throw you want
them to and have the pocket presence. I feel like the similarities are there, but at the end of the day, he
has to put it on the field, and we’ll see how it goes throughout the season.”
(On building the pass rush with this defense) “I definitely can see that it’s possible. Coach [Urban
Meyer], he went into the draft, he went into free agency to kind of rebuild that defensive line and I feel
like that’s going to be one of our strong points this season. Like we always say, rush and cover work
together and if we can get those guys going, we’ll have a great season in the backend as well.”
(On S Jarrod Wilson) “[He’s a] great guy. Like you said, he’s a six-year vet. I’m a five-year vet. We actually
graduated high school in the same class. I did one extra year in college, so we’re the same age. But just
seeing the maturity like that, it’s really just inspiring and he does everything right. He’s on the details
and he’s a true vet.”
(On S Andre Cisco) “I like the way he moves, especially coming off a knee injury being able to move like
that. I don’t know when he had surgery, but you wouldn’t be able to tell just from looking at him. Quick
breaks, he’s really poised. He’s poised to be a young player. I remember coming in, I wasn’t as poised as
him and I was telling him that. So, I’m just trying to stay in his ear just so he can kind of see where his
game is compared to some of the other guys.”
(On his vaccination status) “That’s my personal business. I’ll leave it at that.”
(On not being in press coverage during practice) “It’s tough because it’s just like you have some tools
and you go in there and just take a tool out that you kind of need. It’s tough right now but it kind of
helps us master that off man and then I’m pretty sure when these pads get on, we’ll be able to get in
these guys’ faces a little bit and kind of challenge these guys.”

JAGUARS RUNNING BACK JAMES ROBINSON
THURSDAY, JULY 29, 2021

(On what he likes about learning Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell’s offense) “I like everything about
it. I mean, it’s kind of the offense I grew up playing. I’m kind of used to it.”
(On how much it helps to have the offensive line back) “Oh it’s great. I mean, it’s not really good when
the linemen [aren’t] there. So, having them there and being able to see how they’re working on their
different blocking schemes, it helps out a lot.”
(On what he’s noticed differently in sports performance this year) “We got a lot of new stuff and
everyone’s in there all the time. I mean, I can’t wait to get done with this so I can go in there. But [it’s]
just great seeing everyone trying to take care of their bodies and everyone is willing to do it—they’re
not tired and just ready to go home and get into bed and want to recover.”
(On whether there has been more excitement from players in regard to sports performance) “Oh yeah, I
mean, everyone is excited about it. When he told us about it, everyone just started cheering and
everything. So, all the guys love it and we’re just going to keep using it until we need new stuff.”
(On whether he’s used any of the new sports performance equipment prior to being in the NFL) “No,
I’ve never really used any of that stuff before. So, this is like my first time doing all this.”
(On whether the sports performance equipment is cool) “Yeah, it’s real cool. I mean, I love being in
cryotherapy.”
(On whether he can feel a difference in his body after cryotherapy) “Yeah, I feel a lot coming out after
one practice. We’re all still good after one practice, but a couple practices after that, your body starts to
wear down and then once you get in there—going in there, it helps out a lot and it almost feels like the
first day, but not quite.”
(On what it’s like to have family and fans out here at training camp) “It felt great. I honestly didn’t see
[my family] until after practice because they actually came from home. So, I mean, it was great seeing
them, they surprised me. And it was just great seeing all the fans out there and I can’t wait to have them
in the stadium.”
(On his thoughts on QB Trevor Lawrence thus far) “[He’s a] great guy. As you can see, he can throw very
well, maneuver in the pocket. I can’t wait to see what he does on the field.”
(On whether anything stands out about the offensive line) “I like everything about it. It’s going to open
up a lot of the run game and passing game, just having all those guys back there and [having] fresh legs
coming out of the back field.”

(On whether it’s too early to determine the ratio of carries) “Oh no, I don’t know yet. Whenever
everyone gets their opportunity, we’re going to go out there and do our jobs, so that is all we’re worried
about.”
(On the personalities in the running back room and if they all are different) “No, I feel like it’s kind of all
the same. We’re all kind of just chill. Like last year, it was … i think we had one guy in there that was [a
little louder]. But everyone’s just chill, we all laugh about stuff, so it’s just nothing really different.”
(On whether they pick on RB Travis Etienne Jr. because he’s the rookie) “No, no, no, we don’t do that.
He’s a cool guy and it’s great to have him in the room.”
(On his thoughts on the competition at the running back position) “I don’t think about it. I always think
about the competitiveness, but when I’m out here and it’s my turn to go, I’m always going to try to play
and get what I can.”
(On how his body conditioning is different from last year) “I feel a lot faster and I’m able to move a little
bit more. I feel like I’ve gotten stronger and I’ve tried to slim down a little bit. It’s good, it feels good.”
(On the emphasis on maybe conserving energy and recovering) “They always talk about having fresh
players coming out and I know once the season comes, having those fresh players is going to help out a
lot. I mean, a big play happens, you get a couple more and then come out, and then go back in and you
can have another big play just by having fresh legs, so I think that’s going to help out a lot.”
(On whether it’s nice having a different situation compared to this time last year) “I mean, coming here,
you’re always being watched and I [could be] thinking about [that] I can lose my job any second, I can
get cut, I can have any of that stuff. So, I try not to look at it like that, and I just come out and work and
do what I have to do every time.”
(On whether there is a teammate that he has noticed is a lot different than last year) “I would say
Laviska [Shenault Jr.]. I mean, seeing Laviska last year and seeing him now, I can tell he’s gotten strong
and he’s a lot faster for sure. So, that guy is going to be someone to watch again.”
(On how complex this offense is in comparison to others) “For me, not as much. I’ve been in an offense
like this before and it just kind of comes natural.”
