(On OL Anton Harrison’s performance at left tackle) “Man, he’s a natural athlete, so the
adjustment from left and right, he’s picked up on it quick. And he used to be a left tackle
from what I was told. So, he’s picked up on it really fast and he’s going to be a great asset,
especially when Cole [OL Cole Van Lanen] gets back or whoever’s out there. He’s going to
hold that side really strong.”
(On whether he’s ready to get the season going) “Oh yeah. After Preseason 2, it’s like, okay.
All right, we got one more. And then after this preseason, then it’s like, basically, it’s next
time we go out here on this field, it’s us. And we’re not stopping until late January, well,
February, January. So yeah, I’m ready to go. And you can just tell just by today being a little
jog-through practice, it’s like, we need to fine tune everything. Everything needs to look like
how it’s going to look Week 1. All the little communication errors that if we don’t make it, it’s
like, that’s over with. It’s time to lock in, and it’s time to get this thing going. So, yeah, it’s
ready.”
(On what he likes and what he wants to improve on in year two of the defensive system) “I
think it’s just expecting what he’s going to call and kind of knowing why he’s calling these
plays, what’s the expectations of how the defense needs to be. So, it’s just kind of knowing
him as a person, knowing him as a caller. And us as players, how well can we just be our
natural self. And so, for me, it’s just hear the call, line up, be the best football player that I
can be, because at the end of the day, that’s what we are. We’re football players, you know?
All that thinking, all that extra stuff that we do, that’s out the window. Line up and let’s go
play football the way we’re supposed to.”
(On the benefit of back-to-back joint practices) “I don’t know. Whatever they put on the
schedule is what I got to do. So, I don’t know. We’re about to find out. Ask me next week.”
(On the young edge rushers) “I mean, they can come in and play and make plays
immediately. Obviously, you can tell just by putting on the tape, man, we have a lot of young

guys that are proving themselves. There’s not a lot of spots to fill. And so, when you have a
lot of great guys that are playing good football, especially young guys, who is going to be
those one or two guys that are going to make the cut? And all those guys are battling for
those one or two spots. It’s like that in a lot of different rooms as well. So, they’re coming in
with the right approach. And basically whoever plays better, whoever’s the better football
player is going to make this team, basically. But they all can make it. I’m just excited to see
what that final cut’s going to be. I’m going to be upset to see what that final cut’s going to
be, and just got to take it the way it is.”
(On the value of joint practices versus playing in a preseason game) “It’s that mindset of
going against somebody else. Even when it’s the first day of pads, it’s like, first day of pads,
we got to go. You know the person. So, it’s just like, for me, I’m going to be aggressive. We’re
going to set the edges. We’re going to go as hard as we can. But when it’s somebody else,
it’s like, I don’t like you. And I don’t want to know who you are. I don’t want to check on your
family. I don’t want to see how you’re doing after here. Like, I’m here to do what’s being
called at a very high level and make the plays that I’m supposed to make. And so, that’s the

type of energy and that’s the type of things we get during these joint practices. One-on-
ones, first thing we do after indys, right to one-on-ones. Get your mind ready. And for me,

that’s a good mindset builder for me. Just win. You know what I’m saying? Just win. Don’t

worry about team, don’t worry about hard count, don’t worry about that. Win your one-on-
one. And that’s what I like to do my best. So, I can’t wait. We got a great team coming in,

and I’m ready to go to war with them.”
(On spending time with fans after practice) “I mean, us as football players, for me, it’s easy
because, long story short, man, those are memories that they’re going to have forever. A
keepsake that they can have, whatever they do with them is whatever they do with them.
Some kids might cherish them; some kids might lose them. But it’s like, if I can give a kid an
opportunity to remember something, and for me, I can just go to the equipment staff and
get another pair [of cleats]. So, a pair of cleats that I wear just because I want to wear them
today means so much more to one of these kids out here that look at them like, ‘I got a
piece of an NFL player.’ You know what I mean? So, the value and the connection that we
can have with our fans goes deeper than just what we see. For me, it’s just a piece of
equipment. To them, it’s, wow. It’s coming from this person. Those are moments I cherish.”
(On chemistry between he and DE Travon Walker) “I would take it a little further. I would feel
like I know what everybody’s doing because we got to know what the defense is about. I
know where he’s going to be. I’ll tell you that. Like, we have this one call. I know where he’s
going to be. I feel like I know what everybody’s doing. But I think I know what you’re trying to

get at. I think when we are rushing together, like, kind of playing off of each other, I know
how he’s going to rush. Like, if he has the hot call and he has the one-on-one and he wins
fast, I know I can wrap under him. And he knows if I take the inside, I know he’s going to
wrap over me. So, the trust is there. I think we just built a trust throughout the years, and
that allows us to play fast, and know, and as soon as he hears something or sees
something, he’s going to communicate to me and I trust him. I’m not going to be like, ‘I don’t
think you’re telling the truth.’ You know what I’m saying? I’m going to be like, ‘I believe you. I
trust you. I know you do the film study. I know you’re going to trust your eyes.’ So, I trust him
when it comes to that, but I trust the whole defense when we go out there.”
(On the reasoning behind understanding the entirety of the defense) “I mean, it’s pushed by
the coaching staff. It’s a trickle-down effect, you know? It starts up top, goes to positional
coaches, goes to players, goes to the captains, it goes to the players, and now it’s like, if I
know what the DBs are doing in the back end, they know that I know, so I’m going to hold
them to a standard of you all weren’t on your stuff. And it’s vice versa. If the DBs are locking
everybody up, it should be a sack. You know what I mean? If we’re getting pressure, we’re
forcing bad passes, it should be a pick. And we talk about this in film, where’s the safety
rotations? This is the reason why we do it. This is the reason why we communicate. This is
the reason why we slide when we’re supposed to slide. It’s built on trust. And if we can trust
that all 11 people are going to be where they’re supposed to be, we’ll be the best defense in
the world.”
(On what kind of training camp he’s having) “Personally? I mean, it’s a good camp. I’m ready
to get going. I think having that joint practice really was like, dang. I really want to tackle
somebody. Or I really want to rush the passer. I want to see what I can do full throttle. But I
know it’s like, I can’t rush that process, you know what I’m saying? It is what it is. And we
have a schedule for a reason. We have joint practice for a reason. But when the time
comes, when we play Week 1 against the Browns, we’re going to be ready to go and be fired
up just as much as everybody else, hopefully.”
(On DT Matt Dickerson’s interception) “I love it, man. They got him twice. He dropped one
last time. No, first one he absolutely missed. I didn’t see it. Then the second op[portunity]
he got, he dropped it. And now the third one, he picked it. It’s just cool to see, you know
what I’m saying? And I wanted to make sure I ran with him so I can get out the next play.
Shout out to Matt, man. He’s been having a heck of a camp. I’m excited for him. I think we’re
going to be as stout as ever upfront. I can’t wait to get going again.”

(On attending LB Von Miller’s Sack Summit) “I think we all say the same stuff. That’s the
biggest takeaway that I can get from being around those guys. And I’m at a spot now
whereas, I’m talking now. Like, guys are coming to me asking me, ‘What’s your process?
What do you think about? How do you rush? What is your mindset?’ So, for me, it’s more of
as an educator, but also, like, we’re all saying this. All the guys are saying the same thing.
It’s just, how are we approaching it? How is our routine outside the building? That’s the only
difference that I could take from everybody else. But football’s football at the end of the
day, and it’s very instinctual. Once you line up, you get the call, the play. When the ball
snaps to when the ball doesn’t snap anymore, it’s instinctual. Play football. And there’s a
lot of great football players, and I’m blessed to be one of them.”

(On what he saw from QB Joey Aguilar in Friday’s game) “Yeah I think he had some clean
pockets, not discrediting what he did. Just towards the end of the game, it was cleaner, a
little bit cleaner. I thought he did a nice job of just finding the completions that were there.
Not trying to do too much and, in all actuality ask him, he should have probably been
100%. The one that was incomplete where he moved off his spot; he can make that throw.
The movement game is where we got to keep working with him. Like when he does get
moved off his spot and has to break around or have a dirty pocket, still be able to find
completions, but yeah, it was a good showing.”
(On if it was impressive for Aguilar to play well in game with limited practice reps) “Yeah.
They get enough throwing and catching, and they get enough reps. You look around the
NFL, it’s happening kind of everywhere, and so it’s like that’s kind of his job. I’m not
discrediting what he did. You expect them in these settings to complete the ball and have
more completions than incompletions. But I did think the one that was nice to me was, the
rollout, hits the sail route to Michael [WR Michael Wortham], like right on the face. To me,
what stood out was more the accuracy of the throws that I thought were really impressive.
The one on the touchdown to Peña [WR Trebor Peña], where it was one, two, progression,
hitting him across the middle, in stride. Those are the ones that I was a little bit more, okay,
that’s a real play, that’s something that’s going to continue to translate, and we can keep
building off of.”
(On the combination of lineups at this stage of camp) “Yeah, especially for the joint with
Tampa and just getting those guys a ton of reps and trying to maximize these ops
[opportunities], because we won’t be in pads again until game week, after this week. And
so, that’s the reality of just how things fall and where we’re at, and we ended up having one
more padded day than last year’s training camp. So, you got to maximize these ops, and the
continued continuity and chemistry is so important that every single time we step out here,
there has to be real intentionality and not just, ‘Okay, this is another training camp practice.’
Like, that isn’t it anymore, guys. We’re building towards something, we’re sharpening our

edge towards something, and I thought, [RB] Chris Rodriguez [Jr.] today, he practiced that
way. And we got to continue to get guys to do the same.”
(On OL Daniel Faalele) “Yeah, we’ll see, right? We’ll have to see how he takes to a whole
new system. He’s been in the same system, I guess you could say, right? Being in Baltimore
and then going to New York, that’s kind of what he’s known. Going to have a pretty large
learning curve, I would imagine, in terms of some of the different things that we do versus
what he’s been doing. But duo is duo, mid-zone is mid-zone, wide zone is wide zone. There
are just some details and tweaks, and calls that are going to be a little bit different for him.
But I didn’t see him have any issues today in terms of getting lined up and just having no
pre-snaps, or ‘what’s the play?’ Like, he didn’t have any of those, and I was calling plays off
the cuff. I mean, it wasn’t all scripted, so he didn’t seem to have any issues, and you hope
that somebody, obviously, with the size that he has, that he’ll be able to help us this year.”
(On the plan for OL Cole Van Lanen) “All individual. So, it’ll just be all-individual, to get
some of that work. He’s got walk throughs, jog through stuff, but no team right now. No,
putting him in those positions. So, when we do that stuff, he’s going to be with strength and
conditioning, being able to get some of that work in.”
(On joint practices when they are back-to-back) “Just a little bit trimmed on day one and
two. It’s a little bit of a split almost from what we did last week against Carolina. We just
have to work through that and see where we’re at in terms of the health and all that for the
second day. But we’re going to talk to those guys and get a feel for where they’re at as well
after their preseason game, and get an idea. But it’ll be very similar in a lot of ways to the
Carolina joint in terms of the structure. It would be more the second day that would be a
little different, have a little bit more seven-on-seven, some of that stuff. So, we’re hoping to
be able to get a good amount of work on that first day, though.”
(On if Van Lanen will be ready to go for Week 1) “I can’t say that. I would imagine the way he
would play football against Cleveland is if he practices the week of Cleveland. If he’s able
to practice the week of Cleveland and be able to actually feel comfortable, and feel fast
and feel firm, then I’d be totally fine. But he’s going to have to practice to play, absolutely.”
(On the competitiveness today) “Yeah. I was just asking J-Lew [CB Jourdan Lewis] to play it
clean, and he was barking back. It was good. Yeah, I didn’t think they came out here and
approached it with poor demeanor. I thought it was good in terms of the energy and the
guys having some competitiveness in the seven-on-seven in the red zone. It’s always a little
challenging, especially for the fronts, to really go when you’re in spiders, right? Did we

make that play? Did we not? Did we block that guy? Did we not? And there’s a little bit of
gray when it comes to this setting, but I was definitely pleased with the way that they
actually came out, approached it, had good energy, and had some intentionality.”
(On how he benefited working with Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield while in Tampa Bay)
“Yeah, it was awesome. Had a blast. He made work a lot of fun every day. Having a little bit
of preexisting knowledge of the system really helped. And then, he taught me a ton in terms
of what’s sometimes too much, what’s not enough, what does he need? And everybody’s
so different, right? They’re all, like, a golfer, the quarterbacks. Like, they’re all different in
their own ways. And just the competitive leadership that I really appreciated and continued
to learn from him. He was very secure in himself to put it on him. Whether it was in a
meeting, after the game, in front of the whole team, in front of the whole group. He would,
‘Hey guys, I got to play better. I got to be better.’ It’s that stuff that when you see your best
player doing it and taking the accountability, that’s something that, as a coach, you’re like,
‘Shoot, man, like, if he’s doing it, I need to do that too.’ So yeah, excited to be able to see
him this week.”
(On DT Matt Dickerson’s interception) “Well, I almost got run over. I was crouching kind of
right behind the play and almost got stampeded, so I was in a little bit of a state of shock
that Dickey was making that play in terms of how the heck did we end up here? No, I was
not pleased (laughs). No, I’m kidding. I was. It was great to see, Dickey to be able to go,
athletically, make a freaking play. I mean, that’s great for our team. It’s great for our
defense. Frustrating for the offense, frustrating for our screen game. But it is what it is, and I
was excited, yes.”
(On Dickerson’s importance to the defensive line) “He’s a, I don’t want to say a rock, but he
is so consistent with the way that he comes out and hits blocks. The way that he strikes
blocks, the way that he can play firm at the point of attack. His hands are so heavy. When
you just shake his hand, you just grab his hand. He’s so dense and thick, and he’s violent
when he can be able to get to his hands in extension and shed. He’s a strong dude and his
journey is so impressive. It’s such a great learning op for so many young players that not
everybody’s a one-through-five draft pick, and life’s easy and their career’s easy and they
make it. Like, he had to work really hard to finally, truly make it. And so, I’m glad that it’s
with us. I’m glad that he’s able to call this place home for now, and he’s making a huge
impact for our team.”
(On OL Emmanuel Pregnon) “I think this will be a good test. I think this will be a nice test
this week. Todd [Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles] and their defense, they throw a lot

of different looks at you. Last week in Carolina and in New Orleans was a little bit more of a
similar defense to each other. Less pressure, stunts, twists, movement so that was great to
get him kind of going. Now, this is going to be a little bit of a test in terms of being able to,
handle all that: the communication, the moving parts, the picks, the stunts, the twists, the
pressures. I think this will be a great op for us to be able to really work with him and work
through this week and hopefully he continues to ascend.”
(On DE Josh Hines-Allen) “Yeah, I think he’s had a nice camp. I thought in the joint, he
showed up in a major way in terms of getting a real competitive op to go. I think that Josh,
he knows how to practice, so he knows maybe if he’s going against the second offensive
line to work technique, to work fundamentals, but also not to maybe beat the guy every
single play that you know you can. Like, there’s a balance to that. You want to see these
guys wreck practice when we are good-on-good. Like, that’s when I want to see you wreck
it. Like, go. Absolutely, wreck practice. Our first group, if they can’t block you, damn we got
better as a team. And so, I think he’s had a really nice camp. I think he’s excited for this
season and this startup. I think he’s itching a little bit to get going. And I’m excited to see
him against Tristan [Buccaneers OL Tristan Wirfs] this week a little bit and [Buccaneers OL]
Luke Goedeke, both those tackles are good tackles. They’ve both gotten paid already, and
this will be a great test for our edge guys.”
(On the players battling for a roster spot heading towards the end of camp) “Yeah, it’s more
of a result of the body of work. I think you always leave the option open, and man,
somebody comes out here this week and absolutely balls in the preseason game. And it
could be somebody that’s maybe made a few plays already, and that was ascending there,
or maybe somebody that hasn’t made a ton of plays in the first two games, or whatever it is.
And you hope to be able to give these guys the op to go do it. And we’re going to mix up
some play calling with some of the coaches in this game, which will be great to get some
guys some experience. But this is a big week for a lot of these guys that are trying to make
this team. And so much of that evaluation also is, can they follow direction on a scout
card? Can they do what we’re going to ask them to do on the show team? That might not
always correlate with making plays in the games. If you can’t follow direction, do what
we’re asking you to do, practice clean, still with developmental upside, well, that’s not
somebody we’re going to be too juiced about having on the scout team. And so, that’s a
balance. That’s something that we’ve been working through and being able to evaluate
throughout this whole training camp. But this week, like a day like today, that’s an op for us
to be able to see some of these young guys, can they follow direction when we’re asking
them to kind of give a look in a way? Can they handle that? Or can they not handle that?
That’s something that we have to continue to watch.”
