(On CB Montaric Brown) “It’s been really cool, he came in, what draft pick was he? Like a
seventh rounder. Yeah, he was a later draft pick. Came in and just, since he got here, just
super hard worker, very scrappy, competitive. I think since the first time we practiced
against him, I always though he’s a really good player. And obviously he’s gotten better
every year just as he’s learned more and gotten more and more confidence. And to see him
have to step up in some big moments throughout his career when maybe he wasn’t
expected to be the starter, but he had to go play because we had guys hurt, and he just rose
to the occasion every time so it’s just a guy that you can trust. I feel like he just always does
his job and makes plays in big moments when the ball comes to him. So, really great
teammate and glad he’s on our team.”
(On what he got out of today’s joint practice) “I felt like we got a lot out of today, yeah. I felt
like it was really productive. Was it perfectly clean, no. There’s a lot of stuff to work on and
we have to improve on. I have to improve on, but as far as just the competition, the
competitiveness, the back and forth that always feels game-like. The ebbs and flows where
you get some momentum and then the defense, they make a couple plays, then you have
to steady it out and get back on track. And I thought we did a good job of that today. Just
have to find some more consistency, limit some of the penalties, some of the negative
plays. Obviously, I had the one turnover, so there’s a couple things that we need to work on
just to be consistently better, but I thought there was a lot of great things. I thought we ran it
really well and we made some big plays in the passing game too.”
(On if he is satisfied on where the offense is at this point in training camp) “Yeah, not
satisfied with necessarily where we’re at, but where we’re heading. I really believe that
we’re getting better. I think we were a lot better today than we were last week when we went
against the Saints. I thought we had a lot more energy. We got after it. I thought we just
brought the juice every play. We ran it really good. We were really physical, so there was
some big improvements, but football, there’s such a fine line. There’re so many details, so I
think that there’s going to be plenty on the tape to learn from. And I know I need to get
better, so it’s not necessarily satisfied, but definitely believing and I know that these guys,
all our guys out here are getting better every day, and that’s what we’re working towards.”
(On the rookies comfortability) “Yeah, just seeing those guys make plays is really cool. And I
think it comes from, as they get more and more comfortable with the system and they can
just go play. And that’s when their talents can show is when they’re not thinking, so I think
all those guys are getting there every day. And it’s not the easiest system to learn, so it takes
a little bit of time, but I love where those guys are heading. I think our tight end room is
awesome and really all of our offensive guys that have come in as rookies have done a good
job at receiver, O-line, tight ends, the backs. They’ve done a really good job so you just have
to keep getting better.”
(On RB LeQuint Allen Jr.) “Other guys really have to step up. I feel like I’ve talked about him a
lot with you guys, and you guys always ask kind of, what’s his deal? Why does everybody
love the guy so much? And we’ve talked about just the energy. He knows his job. He plays
with passion. Just the intensity, the love for the game, all those things so it’s hard to kind of
match or replicate that. But as far as guys taking over that role as far as protection stuff and
third down and just knowing all the checks we have to step up. And I know those guys can
do it, but it’s has to happen. So we have to get everybody on board and I know guys will be
ready to do that, but definitely going to miss LeQuint for the next little bit.”
(On if today felt like game reps) “I think the joint practices are really really good just
because they do feel more like a game necessarily than always going against your same
team. And you get to see different looks and guys come in and just that competition. It feels
a little bit more like a game. But obviously I’m not getting hit still, so that’s the one part
that’s still not quite like games, still wearing a red jersey. But I think as far as the other 10
guys, we treat it as a game and guys did a good job of taking care of business. And I
thought, like I said, we did some really good things. So who knows, I’ll let Coach make
those decisions but I do think that we got the most out of today and we got better.”
(On the offensive line and running back’s energy today) “It’s great, especially when you can
run the ball and that’s such a momentum boost for your offense and for your team when
you can run it, run it, run it and stay on schedule. And I thought we did a really good job of
that and not only just staying on schedule, we had a few really big runs that if we were
playing full tackle, probably would’ve gone for 20, 30, maybe even scored on some of them.
So that’s huge. I think it’s a testament to one, our defense is really good against the run, so
we’re seeing that every day. And sometimes it’s like running your head into a brick wall. But
you talk about all the little details and how important they are because when you’re playing
a defense that’s so stout against the run, all that stuff matters. And then today, when you
come out with that intensity, all the details are on point and you come off the ball, now
we’re seeing these creases hit a little bit more. I think it’s just that iron sharpening iron in
practice that’s really paying off. And we still got a lot of work to do, but it was much better
run game today. It was awesome.”
(On if he is still learning about Head Coach Liam Coen) “I’m sure. Yeah, I’m sure. I guess it’s
been about a year and a half, so I definitely know that there’s stuff that I’m still learning. I
think as far as our relationship, it’s really good. We communicate, we talk a lot but yeah,
there’s definitely things we’re still learning about each other and that’s just going to grow
and grow the longer we’re together. And definitely though, you know how people operate
and then we get in the heat of the moment. We’re both competitive. I’ve talked about that a
little bit, so you know what to expect from each other a little bit. And if we go at it a little, I
think that’s the cool part is we’re both passionate about it. We both care about it. And we’re
able to bounce back from stuff like that really quickly because we both just want the best
for this team, this offense.”
(On if Coen has brought fieriness out of him) “Yeah, for sure. I’ve talked about that a little bit
too. I think his intensity has definitely risen my intensity just from a snap-to-snap basis and
just talking with the guys and trying to get energy going. And I think that’s important and
helped me play a little bit more of that edge and I think our offense takes that as well. And
we’re all able to do more of that.”
(On if it is harder to manufacture a sense of urgency) “In camp, I think there’s always days
where you don’t necessarily have the most sense of urgency as a collective team. And you
have to be able to push the guy next to you and say, ‘Let’s go, man. Like, this is where we
have to grind through it and we have to bring it every day,’ because that’s what it takes.
That’s what it takes to get better and to be a great team and offense. And you have to bring
that. So you notice it more and more as you get older, just how intentional you have to be
with your mindset when you step out of here every day, because it’s going to be hot. Guys
are going to get tired, you’re going to have to push past a certain comfort level where guys
don’t want to go and I thought today we did a really good job of that. Really as camp’s gone
on, we’ve gotten better and better. Maybe a couple days early we’d have some huge swings
as far as we come out flat one day. I think that’s starting to level out as it should towards the
end of camp and we’re understanding more and more where we need to push, where we
need to stay on guys and keep them going and where we also need to just take it on
ourselves and be ready to go. And I think guys have done a good job.”
(On Ezra Cleveland and Anton Harrison) “They’ve done a great job. Those guys just
bouncing around. Obviously, Anton’s flipped sides. Ezra’s played both guards and some
tackle and he’s moved around a lot. I think just showing that flexibility and versatility of
those guys up front is really important. And guys, it’s the most selfless group in football. It
really is. Those guys move everywhere, do whatever the team needs, even if it’s not the
most comfortable thing for them. And you don’t hear any complaints about it, so I’m just
happy those guys are able to do that for one, but willing to do it.”

(On if he is satisfied with the direction of the offense) “Yeah, I thought today was a good
step in the right direction in terms of running a football and getting stuff targeted and
communicated the right way. I was pleased with the way the backs were hitting the holes.
Still tough to evaluate the second and third level, what the yards actually come out to be. I
was pleased with at least the line of scrimmage at times. They’ve got some guys up front
that I have a lot of respect for on their D-line, and I thought our guys played hard.”
(On the physicality the team showed today) “Yeah, I think that’s kind of what we challenged
them with a little bit. To come out and set a tone and come out and play fast instead of,
alright, we got to get punched in the mouth, and then we respond. So that was, nice to see
us be able to come out and start fast.”
(On if starters will play on Friday) “I’m not sure. I got to see how we came out of today. I
don’t want to say either way yet. I really got to go look at this tape, see how we kind of come
out of it. I’ll make probably a decision over the next 24 hours.”
(On if health factors in on his decision to play starters on Friday) “Yeah, I don’t want to
necessarily go out there with not your full group, right? The whole point of it is to try to get
more continued continuity and chemistry and some game experience. So, I’m just not quite
sure yet.”
(On when the run became an emphasis for him as a play caller) “Probably as a kid growing
up in the wishbone. Growing up in that, my dad, when I was young, I mean, that’s what he
did. They ran the heck out of it. We ran the heck out of it in high school. A lot of schemes
actually still carry over. And then, coming up in college too, I mean, [Run Game
Coordinator] Brian Picucci being our O-line coach at the time, we were canning runs,
Oscars, alerts, kills. So, I had to be on it. Our guys had to be on the screws. And it gave me
an appreciation for what it can do for the quarterback, and what it can do for the pass
game. This is a throwing league, right? You have to be able to throw the football, protect the
quarterback and finish in the red zone in two-minute throwing the football. But I know that
as a quarterback, it’s nice to turn around and say, like, ‘Whew, give me a beat here and let
somebody else do something here.’ I think it’s always been instilled in me from a young
age.”
(On TE Nate Boerkircher and TE Tanner Koziol) “I think they’ve grown for sure. I think
obviously for Tanner, being a quasi-receiver in college was something that we were excited
about seeing and curious to see. And we thought, okay, he just wasn’t really in some of
those positions. Does he have the makeup and the want-to? Like, that’s really what it
comes down to. And they’ve both done a nice job. I think we need to clean up a couple of
things technique-wise and sustaining, getting outside of our frame a little bit, getting a little
grabby. Boerk had the one penalty. I know he was trying to be physical but just got to know
when to let go and know when to kind of get your hands refit, some of that stuff. But I’ve
been pleased with them.”
(On play in the red zone today) “I mean, I thought we were pretty good the back half of the
year in the red zone. I think we finished in the top five in the NFL. I think that it also helps
when the quarterback can run. That obviously you don’t necessarily see in this setting. But
he did scramble, right? Like, he made a couple of off-schedule throws, and that’s what I
would attribute a lot of it to, to be honest. When we got better in the red zone last year was
when Trevor [QB Trevor Lawrence] started using his legs. And we saw that again today. It’s
so hard to scheme wide-open or open receivers in the red zone. It’s so much tighter. There’s
less vertical grass. And especially versus a three-man, four-man rush, it’s challenging. And
so, you watch around the league of the top red-zone touchdowns every week, and 90
percent of them are off schedule. They’re just, ‘Hey man, you got to buy a little time. Find a
window. Somebody’s got to make a little move and boom, touchdown.’ And it’s not exactly
how you draw it up, but it’s football. And so that, that’s definitely helped and the
quarterback run game.”
(On WR Jakobi Meyers) “Jakobi, I hate to use the word reliable. I feel like it almost kind of
knocks him down a peg, which is not the case. It’s just you know he’s going to do right. You
know he’s going to, the majority of the time, get open. He’s so quarterback-friendly in that
he understands concepts, I think, differently than most receivers, to where it’s like, alright,
maybe I’m not getting the ball here, but I truly understand why my job is so important to do
every single play because it may not be dialed up for me, but I can still get open. I can still
get the ball. And the way he blocks, him in the walkthroughs, if you could just take a rookie
and follow him around all day and just watch his process and the way he goes through it,
the way he practices, it’s kind of everything you’re looking for from that standpoint.”
(On the importance of seeing team culture in a physical practice) “Absolutely. I thought that
that was something that, when we went out against the Saints, we were really trying not to
fight. You’re trying to keep it clean, you’re trying to get the work in, but then, you’re getting
thrown around, you can’t get kind of pumped either. And I was appreciative there were no
crazy fights; we had a couple scuffles, but I appreciate guys kind of protecting one another,
protecting the team, and not going to take shit.”
(On focusing on technique throughout camp) “Yeah, I thought it was cleaner from a
technique and fundamental standpoint, at least just from afar, from not watching the tape
and seeing it all. I felt like we were a little bit cleaner upfront and not, you got a guy
sustained or position blocked, and you have him, and then technique is losing him, right?
Yes, it’s effort and strain, but it’s also refitting your hands properly, getting back your
leverage, and creating angles. And so, I think that showed up a little bit better today. I’d like
to see us—we got to get our hands on some balls on defense. That’s something that I’ve
been a little disappointed with is not getting any turnovers right now out of these two joints.
I’ve been pleased with the technique and fundamentally trying to get to that sharp spot.”
(On offensive line depth) “Yeah, we need him. We had a good talk, you know? I talked to
Ezra for a while. We are. I mean, it’s no secret. We’re a little nicked up, and we need the
guys that have set the tone for us and physically set a tone to do that now, right? Trust us
and trust that, yeah, we kind of have—I don’t want to call it a sickness, but we’ve got a little
bit of some guys banged up. But trust that, hey, the practice schedule, the way it’s set up,
like, we’re going to protect you and take care of you. But when we go, we got to go. And we
needed him to take that step. I was very pleased with his energy and toughness today.”
(On if QB Nick Mullens will start if Lawrence does not play) “Yeah, I mean, we got to
continue to work through. Absolutely.”
(On what he wants to see from Mullens on Friday) “Yeah, I thought he did some good things
today. Got a little nick in the game, so it wasn’t, I wouldn’t call him perfect, but with what he
had… I mean, sometimes when you’ve got limitations upfront, that’s really challenging
when you’re now working with a group of guys that haven’t played a lot of football up there
and definitely haven’t played a lot of football for the Jags. So, that’s challenging. I thought
he had a beautiful pass to [WR] Josh Cameron down the left sideline over here. When he’s
got time and there’s things happening in rhythm for him, things are good. I thought he had a
great progression on an in-break as well to CJ [WR CJ Williams] and I trust Nick.”
(On OL Daniel Faalele) “Yeah, just continuing to bring depth and guys that have played
meaningful reps in this league. That’s something that you can’t have enough of. We came
into the camp with 16 and got down to about nine the other day. And when you have some
of those things occur, and you want to continue to find guys that have done it, guys that
have played in this league at a high level. He’s got some big size. I’m looking forward to
getting to know him, but the experience is really what matters.”
(On the importance of having families present after practice) “I haven’t seen my son in a
few days. He went to the hospital, came back; he’s okay. But it’s like we haven’t seen our
families hardly. And to get our kids, our families around each other when we can, this is no
skin off our backs, right? It doesn’t affect or impact us in any way besides letting our
players and our staff and coaches be able to have some moments and some time. And I
hope that it brings some levity to the days. I hope that it brings some joy to their days when
they don’t get to see them very often. And that’s something I’ve learned after having kids:
how important that is and how important the actual family dynamic is. For so long, I’m a
single guy going through the profession, and you’re caring only about this. And now that
tree branches out and you’ve got to make sure that you’re pouring into people when you
can, and these are some of the moments that we’re allowed to.”
