(On what his expectations are for year two in the offense) “Just to learn as much as I can
honestly, so they don’t have to sit there and babysit me and hold my hand throughout the
offense. I just want to learn as much as I can and honestly have the other guys play great,
so I can just support them. That’s really all my expectations are.”
(On the past month and what has stood out) “I would say the quality of players, because we
all knew they had talents, it’s just a matter of working hard when you get to the league. And I
feel like all our quality players really put that work in this offseason and it showed when we
hit the grass, so it was fun to be out there competing every day.”
(On the secondary) “Yeah, I would say so. I felt it, honestly. They are around when I’m trying
to get open, but it’s pushed us to be better in our room, so hopefully we just keep having
that iron sharpening iron.”
(On WR Brian Thomas Jr.) “He’s been locked in. He’s a smart dude. I don’t think he gets
enough credit for how smart he is, but he’s a smart individual. I just think the longer he’s
around the game, the more he’s in this offense, the older he gets as a man, he’s going to
continue to get better and better. I think when it really all the way clicks for him, I really
don’t see how you stop him, but good luck to whoever is trying.”
(On what Thomas Jr.’s success does for the rest of the offense) “Man, we were talking about
it yesterday. Whenever B.T. has a good day, the whole team has a good day. Like, the whole
team. So, we all just want to keep putting that belief into him, so he knows how great we
think he is. And if you’re just half of that, we’ll be okay.”
(On the rookie wide receivers) “Consistently made plays. I think even before we hit the field,
they showed how smart they were. They were answering questions faster than us. So, we
weren’t surprised when they came out here and made plays. Everybody, honestly, even
down to the undrafted guys, everybody’s kind of been consistent with how they catch the
ball. They learn quick, they ask questions. It’s been great to have them around.”
(On if he is still learning the offense or refining it) “I feel like I’ve been in so many different
systems now, it’s just understanding the verbiage I would say. Pretty much teams run the
same stuff, it’s just what you call it. So, if I can get all the names glued down, I think that
would be a big help for me, but I wouldn’t say I’m learning too much. It’s the same as him.
I’m trying to refine it. The things I am learning, I really need to hold onto those, but refining
for sure.”
(On timing routes) “That’s football though, so I would say that part, the on the field part, is
maybe a little easier for me. Just being in the classroom, making sure, like I said, I get the
words down so when they do call it, I don’t have to stop think, ‘What’s this in this offense,’
and then go line up.”
(On how his chemistry has grown with QB Trevor Lawrence) “It’s more so just paying
attention to him, so I would say it’s moving in the right direction. We are still finding a way to
make plays, but the more I could pay attention to him, how he moves, how he thinks, what
he’s looking for when we run our routes, I think the better we’ll be. So, he’s just got to keep
doing his thing, and I’ll catch up to wherever he is.”
(On what has stood out about Lawrence this offseason) “For me personally, a guy who
knows the offense as well as he does, it’s easy for me when I have a mistake, he could just
tell me right away and I can go line up and it doesn’t take too long. I can still kind of
understand my job, so that’s been great for me. The way he throws the ball, he could tell
you exactly what we’re thinking and we could tell him exactly what he’s thinking, so the
communication, the help, the leadership, he’s been doing a good job this year.”
(On how impressive Thomas Jr.’s recent play has been) “Super impressed, but I was already
impressed with B.T. from a distance. Just getting here is kind of what the expectation was of
him. It’s just fun watching him play, so it’s just great to have him. I’m happy he’s on our
team and he’s helping us out.”
(On what confidence can do for a player like Thomas Jr.) “As dangerous as he wants to be. I
think he’s that type of player, if he decides that he want to be great that day and he commits
to it, he will be great that day.”

(On how the rookie class has performed on special teams) “It’s been great. It’s been a good
offseason. They really bought in right when they got here. I think it’s a work in progress as far
as where they’re at, but they’re putting in the time, they’re learning the drills and that’s what
this offseason is about is getting them prepped to compete in training camp. So, they’ve
done a really, really good job of buying in and kind of seeing it. A lot of these guys haven’t
played a ton of special teams since early in their college careers. So, a lot of the stuff’s new,
but they’re getting better every day. And to see the last two weeks, they’ve really taken a big
step in their production.”
(On where WR Josh Cameron could fit in the return game) “I think he’s going to be a really,
really good kick returner. He can punt return as well. Fortunately, obviously, we have Parker
[WR Parker Washington], we have guys to punt return. But yeah, Josh has been really, really
good. I think in all phases is probably the best way to say it. I plan on him playing four
phases. He’s going to be a good player for us. I was excited to be able to draft him. He was
one of my favorites watching him. He is showcasing what he can do not only as a receiver,
but for me as well.”
(On whether WR Parker Washington will continue to punt return) “I think, like you said, I
love Parker back there. I think we’ll just try and have to see how that plays out with the
roster and how that looks come Week 1. And it may be changing throughout the season.
There may be games when we need a big play and he’s back there and there’s other times
when we’ll provide a big play from somebody else. So, I think Parker’s back there as the
punt returner if we can, but we’re going to make great decisions as a team, as an
organization. If he is the top target for us as I’d imagine he will be, what does that look like
for special teams? We’ll figure it out, but we have plenty of guys that can return. We have a
good group, so I’m confident and comfortable where we’re at if it’s not Parker.”
(On the UFL awarding four points for 60-yard field goals) “I’d love it. Can we get that in the
NFL? I would love that as our guy can do them, is very, very good at that stuff. That’d be a
cool little bonus if you could get an extra point out of that. I think it’d be a good little
interesting thing for the kickers that can do it. And maybe with our guy, maybe make it a
five-pointer. If we can get a 70, let’s get a 70 five-pointer.”
(On if there will be a 70-yard field goal this season) “It wouldn’t surprise me. Our guy can do
them. There’re several kickers across the league I believe that can do them. I think it could
happen very easily. The guys are getting stronger and more talented as the year goes on. So
yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me. It wouldn’t surprise me if we did it. Anytime we get to about
midfield, we feel like we’re in range and that’s the confidence we have in him, but that’s the
confidence he has in himself.”
(On Little’s long field goals in practice today) “He had some long ones in warmup. He
actually hit a 72-yarder in warmup, so he has the leg to hit those long kicks. That’s the cool
part about it is we’re always in range.”
(On if he expects the NFL to implement rule changes to make it harder to make field goals)
“No, I don’t believe so. I think that’s down the road. I think it’s really cool to see these long
kicks. It’s a cool thing to see when you’re in field goal range, but you’re on the other side of
the 50. Jokingly other teams have said, we get one first down and we’re potentially in range.
They see it from across the field, other game management guys, they’re aware of Cam.
That’s a weapon, that’s a cool thing that we can potentially be in range and send him out
there even on the other side of the 50.”
(On if he sees a future where long snapping specialists are no more) “I don’t believe so.
Those guys are so talented. We’re really fortunate. Ross [LS Ross Matiscik] is the best in the
game. Obviously, he’s gone to a few Pro Bowls to showcase that, but they’re so talented
and it’s such a precise operation. Just the hundredth of a second makes a difference
between a good kick and a blocked kick. So, no, I don’t think it’s so specific. I don’t believe
you could ever go back to that. They’re really talented and really good at what they do.”
(On how rewarding it is to see the specialists be recognized nationally) “I’m proud of those
guys. We were fortunate. Obviously, we came here and we had Logan [P Logan Cooke] and
Ross. And then of course, we add Cam. I feel like I’m part of the family. They’ve been great
to me, but the way you see them work every day, there’s a reason why they’re so talented
and why they’re so good. They’re typically the first guys out here on the field warming up,
getting ready, prepping, they care so much about it. It’s important to be great. They help
each other. They’re brothers. They hold each other accountable. Together, the three of
them, they bond, and it’s special to watch. We’re hoping we keep them here a long time.”
(On what he’s seen from CB Jabbar Muhammad on special teams) “You see what he’s done
defensively. We’ve seen the same improvements. He’s been improving just since we got
him last offseason. So, throughout last training camp/season on practice squad, he got
better and he got better and he got better. And you’re seeing it right now, his gunner
releases and some of the stuff we’re asking him to do. So, he’s improving. I’m excited to see
training camp. That’s the real test for all these guys is what does training camp look like
when you get real competitive reps, and then those training camp practices against other
teams, and then preseason games. He is one of the guys that I’m excited to see what he
can do and showcase what he can do.”
(On DE Wesley Williams’ ability to block punts and kicks) “He cares a lot about it. That’s
one thing about it. He comes to the office all the time. It means a lot to him. He’s big, strong
and fast. So, that’s a good quality for special teams. You see how it translates but he’s
willing and wants to learn more. So, I love the kid. I think the mindset he has, the buy-in to
the team that’s the perfect mindset and perfect for what we look for on special teams.”
(On LB Branson Combs being a special teamer and earning more of a role on defense)
“That’s one thing I tell the guys from day one. Special teams are important. It’s a big part of
this team, but my whole goal is I want them to start on defense or offense. So, I’m rooting
for him. I’m rooting for Ventrell [LB Ventrell Miller]. I know we’ve got a good battle with a
couple of those guys. They’re all great. They’ve been great to me. The best part about it is
whoever doesn’t maybe play as many reps on defense, I’m fired up to get to get to utilize.
So, Branson was a good special teamer for us last year. Even if he’s playing a lot of defense,
I’m going to ask him to stay on some special teams for me. But yeah, him and Ventrell have
both been fantastic for me. They’ll be great. They’ll be four phases, both of them.”
(On if Combs is a selling point to undrafted free agents) “I think he is. I think we have a
bunch of those guys. We had a bunch of rookies, the three undrafted guys, that make our
team on special teams. They end up being three of our better special teamers. The two
rookie running backs last year, they were our two returners. So, that’s what it is. We had
seven rookies that contributed. I think it’s a good challenge for this class and I told them
from day one, there are opportunities, but guess what? Those guys have done it. They’ve
proven it. You have to beat those guys out. So, we have a really good competition come
training camp with a loaded roster that’s coming back with a bunch of good players that we
loved in the draft. Like I said, I’m looking forward to training camp to see those battles.”
(On RB Ameer Abdullah) “Ameer’s been a guy that I’ve watched across the league for a
bunch of years. I’ve always admired the way he plays. He’s a fantastic kick returner, can
punt return as well but he can play all phases. It’s a battle with that running back room
that’s so talented. I’d love him to be here because he’s a very good special teamer as well
as a running back. So, I was excited to get him here and then see him in person. You see
why he’s so talented, but the way he works, his ability on kick return, hitting it downhill, has
a great stim and a good feel. I see why he was so good across watching him on film and of
course facing him all these years.”
HEAD COACH LIAM COEN

(On how much progress the team made this week) “Yeah, I think that over the course of the
offseason, we’ve improved for sure, especially in the areas in which that you can improve in
this time. I think we’ve taken steps in the right direction in terms of the pass game
specifically. I think offensively, pass pro is always challenging during this time, but I think
the amount of reps that we accumulated throwing the football this spring was pretty cool to
see. Guys making plays in one-on-one situations, the timing and spacing. I think our
defensive coverage has improved, guys getting a little bit more confident to come up and
challenge people. And then again, the rush is very difficult to examine during this time, but I
think [DE] Travon Walker showed up in a big way, especially when we got into some
competitive situations, doing what I challenged him with, which was to dominate. Through
the first two days of minicamp, he didn’t lose many reps, so I think we got better.”
(On how important reps are this time of year for guys like S Caleb Ransaw and LB Jalen
McLeod who missed last season) “Huge. I mean, those guys haven’t been on the grass in so
long, so it’s valuable time. It’s going to be a huge jump, I think, for those guys to come from
this time to training camp. I think we’ll hopefully see another step from those guys if they’re
going to be people that are going to help us play this season. I would imagine we’ll see
another jump because so much of this was just about getting them back out into making
checks, calls, adjustments, and then just lining up and playing football. So, hopeful that
those guys take another step this summer.”
(On CB Montaric Brown’s confidence in practice) “Yeah, he’s always kind of played and
practiced with confidence. There are areas in which he can continue to improve, but I think,
look, we signed him to a deal, and he comes out and just is him. He’s practiced the same
way. He’s approached the meetings and practice and games the same way since I’ve been
here the whole time. So, he is consistent, he’s a pro. I think we’ll see another step from
Buster this year in terms of confidence, especially in the red zone.”
(On what stood out about QB Trevor Lawrence this offseason) “Yeah, I think that, I mean, I
don’t know how many picks he actually threw, but I’ve got to believe it was under five
throughout all of OTAs and minicamp. So, I think while trying to challenge himself and our
receivers more with down the field passing, challenging him try new things of concepts and
fit some throws into maybe windows you would otherwise take a check down in. While
balancing that, I thought he did a really nice job taking care of the football, running the
whole operation, managing the protections and some of the concepts on the field. Yeah,
I’m pleased with Trevor’s spring. Absolutely.”
(On having an officiating crew at minicamp) “Yeah, I don’t know how many better there are
than him [NFL official John Hussey]. I’ve been fortunate to be around John for the last three
days. You talk about a pro’s pro, not just the experience that he has, but helping me out
with some communication to the players. They did multiple presentations to our players,
our rookies, our staff, and they sat in on all the position meetings so they’re able to answer
questions live for the coaches and players. And then for me it was like talking to them
about, alright, the controllable penalties versus the non-controllables, what can we
control? And it comes down to either coaching it to happen or allowing it to happen. And
so, some of that stuff we can control, some of it we can’t. So, it’s been great to have those
guys. He’s got a great crew, and I think he’s one of the best out there.”
