(On improving communication throughout bye week) “I would say probably communication within the
entire team, not just the secondary. I feel like this is a week to restart and reset ourselves to see what
we did well, what we did bad. Just self-scout that so we can get back and change this trajectory right
here.”
(On the defense regressing in recent weeks) “It’s a team sport, so you can’t really point fingers at
whoever. I would definitely say that we can definitely tighten screws a bit as a unit, just settle down and
really be on every detail of the game. This is a game that’s turned more, in my opinion, more mental
than anything. It can’t just be run and hit, run and hit. It’s thinking about how I’m getting set up for this
play, how they are trying to attack me and the defense on this play. We just need to be more cerebral
with stuff like that.”
(On what the defense has been doing well this season) “We need to fix just being more consistent. The
consistency is not there. As a unit, we make a lot of good plays, and you see a lot of flashes throughout
most of the game. When we get to those times where we really need everyone to really be on their
stuff, everyone needs to be conscious of that moment right there. What we have done well, in my
opinion, are takeaways. I feel like we’ve really gotten after the ball this year, our D-line, in the back end,
we can really feel those guys up front. Our defense is much faster, much quicker, really physical. We just
need to do the right stuff all the time.”
(On playing with S Andre Cisco) “It’s great. I love when a young professional comes into the league and
like you said, just grows game-in and game-out. Cisco [S Andre Cisco] is a guy, like I said, he’s a young
professional that just comes in and takes it very seriously. I love to be around guys like that because
when I’m out on the field, I know there’s guys out there that have prepared like I have.”
(On if S Andre Cisco’s performance last game could be a turning point) “Yeah, I feel like in this league,
it’s all about consistency like I just said. It’s just that the last game was the last game. That’s what you’ve
got to learn in this league. Every week you have to come out and prove yourself every week. It doesn’t
matter what I did last game; good game last game, but this game we just have to go have another good
game like last game.”

(On mentality of the team during this time of the season versus last season) “Honestly, I can’t even
remember back to last year. Going into this bye, I’m just always looking to improve. That’s just what it is.
Improve, Improve, Improve however that may be, whether that may be more film study, more recovery,
physically, whatever. I’m just looking to improve and that’s kind of where the mindset and headspace of
the team is right now. I believe that self-improvement is the first step to improving the team. If you’re
good, come assert yourself to the team, and ultimately, the team will find its way to being on that path
as well.”
(On stability of this season versus last season) “I wouldn’t say it’s easy, it’s hard every day I walk into this
building. It’s hard. It’s going to be hard, it’s as simple as that. Same as last year, it’s going to be hard.
Even if I was on a good team right now, it’ll be hard to do whatever we need to do because it’s the
National Football League. The margin of error is very small in this league. The way we’re doing it from
this point on, we’re just going to have to do it with discipline and be relentless.”
(On if the team feels determined despite the record) “Yeah, absolutely. We got seven games left, we’re
sitting at 3-7, we can finish with double digit wins. But like I said, it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be
hard, man. Everybody just needs to be on their stuff and really be dialed. You have to be dialed in this
league and like I said before, the margin of error is small, and it’s been killing us lately. We do have a
young team, but we get paid to do what we do so we got to come out here and perform.”
(On personal growth of this season) “I know I keep saying this word, but consistency. That’s all I think
about, just come in here and like you said, I got to do that every game. If I’m the guy who I think I am,
who my team thinks I am, I have to do that every game. We’re losing, so that doesn’t make it better, but
I like to get more of that into the defense and we’ll see how it goes.”
(On if having explosive plays inspires other teammates) “Yeah, absolutely. It’s contagious. That’s just
like, not only me, if Josh Allen [OLB Josh Allen] makes a play. That’s going to make me want to make a
play. If I see my guy balling, I’m ready to go now. I see Foye [LB Foyesade Oluokun] come down and
make a hit, I’m ready to go. If they see me come down and make a hit, that’s just setting the tone. That’s
what I say every game, I want to be a tone setter. I want to be the one who ignites that fire within my
unit to say ‘Hey, let’s go.’”
(On the headsets malfunctioning during a drive in Sunday’s game) “Yeah, so like you said, the headset
went out for about three plays down in the red zone and we were basically just trying to remember as
players because there was no more communication from player to coach. Honestly, the safeties didn’t
know that the headsets went out. When we did realize, we tried to collectively come together and call a
call that we had been practicing all week in practice. The communication was bad, the hurry up had
tempo with it too, so there was a bunch going on. Motion with it, so there was a lot going on.”

(On miscommunication during a motion play due to headsets malfunctioning) “Yeah, if everyone was in
their head playing the same defense. When we got people playing two different defenses, the guy who
was supposed to run over, yes, he would be in the right defense, but he thought he was playing a
different defense. It just is what it is, it’s a bummer.”
(On if someone on the field can call a timeout) “No, I don’t mess with timeouts. I leave that to the
coaches and the quarterback. I don’t miss with no timeouts.”
(On if anyone has the ability on the field to call a timeout) “I wouldn’t say, no. I wouldn’t burn a timeout
out there. I just wouldn’t do that. You never know when you’ll need a timeout. Offense maybe, delay of
game or something like that. In that case, you just hope the quarterback may not look over there, but
you’re playing the best quarterback in the league, so he’s getting over there.”
(On thoughts of playing on different fields) “Turf wise? I don’t like playing on turf at all. All turf, I actually
hate turf. It’s just bad on my bones, my bones are sore after every time. My joints are literally sore after
every time I play on turf. Yesterday, I played on grass, and it felt great. Practiced on a grass field and it
felt good, turf I don’t like. There’s a lot of injuries that come with playing on turf and everything.”
(On if playing on turf impacted his decision to come to Jacksonville) “No.”
(On the recent conversations among the NFLPA and turf fields) “No, I heard they just have bad fields,
but I agree with it. Turf I just don’t like; it’s concrete. I’m getting slammed on the concrete. It doesn’t
feel good.”
(On weighing different teams to play for based on turf) “I did have two equal offers actually, I had an
offer bigger than here, but it was Florida, so I got to come to Florida. I’m a Florida man.”
(On performance of the secondary overall in recent weeks without CB Shaq Griffin) “I feel like we have a
pretty good next-man-up mentality. We had young guys come in and it still looks the part. Obviously,
we’d love to have Shaq [CB Shaquill Griffin], he’s one of our playmakers here on the team, but this is the
National Football League. Next man up, just like me. Last year I went down and the next man up. It’s the
nature of the game, it is what it is, but we’d definitely love to have him back.”
(On the value of CB Montaric Brown being the next man up) “Oh, it’s huge. In my opinion, as soon as you
can get in here right away and start playing football, you start learning. That’s when you really start
learning, when you can get thrown into those live situations and does learning mean I might have to get
beat a couple of times? It is what it is. These guys get paid too. The coaches have to realize that, players
have to realize that. When you got guys that might get beat sometimes, but I like his playmaking ability
out here more. Which one do you give up? It’s kind of one of those things.”

(On what needs to change offensively for the team to start stacking some wins) “I think especially as of
recently, it’s kind of that slump that we’ve hit in kind of like the middle part of that game on Sunday. It
happened to us early, middle of the first and into the second quarter. We were trying to figure out what
we could do offensively. We weren’t converting on third downs. Some missed opportunities for us. We
were able to get in the endzone at the end before half. It takes us a little bit to get going, and when
you’re playing a good team like that, there’s really no margin for that. I think that for us, really taking
advantage of every time we’re able to step on the field. We have to stay on schedule. I kind of always
talk about it, but it really is a flow for us offensively. I think that’s when we’re producing at our best.
That’s one of the things that we definitely need to hone in on and really be critical on ourselves this
week and try to get better for the back half of this season.”
(On if it hurts when the team is losing even if he has a good game) “Honestly, after Sunday’s loss, I was
sick to my stomach. It hurts just as bad. Just because me, personally, I do that so we can win the game. I
feel like if I’m playing at my best and I’m trying to make every opportunity, make the best out of it, then
it’s going to help put us in a position to win a football game, and I really believe that me along with a lot
of other guys on this team have that kind of impact. If you play your best, there’s a higher chance of us
being able to win the game. You know it hurts you when you put all that into it, then you’re not able to
come out on the other side because at the end of the day, I’m sick and tired of losing, and I know
everyone in this locker room, everyone in this building wants to win a lot, so that’s how we work. That’s
how we approach it, so like I said, we’re going to keep working towards it.”
(On a touchdown throw QB Trevor Lawrence threw to him in a really tough spot and if these plays are
the type of reassurance that the team needs of where Trevor and the team are headed) “That’s a
perfect example of trust and trusting each other and one another. That’s a route and a play that we’ve
been working on since the day I stepped in the building, the staff installed the offense, a common red
zone play that we love and haven’t been able to call it many opportunities this year, and we were able
to get it called. We repped it a thousand times. I know the ball is going to be at the front pylon, so I’ve
got to beat my guy there, and Trevor did a great job by putting it there and putting it in a spot where
only I can get it. That’s just trusting that the throw’s going to be there, him trusting that I’m going to be
there, that I’m going to win. Those are the type of things that obviously you love to see because that
spreads in every other asset of his game, not only his throws but his checks, protection, and
communicating with guys, so it’s definitely progress you love to see.”
(On his career-high season touchdowns and his fit within the Jacksonville offense) “Most definitely, and I
feel like it is still kind of evolving from where we started at the beginning of the season to the middle of
the season to now. Week in and week out, Doug (Head Coach Doug Pederson) and Press (Offensive
Coordinator Press Taylor) do a great job of kind of finding different matchups, not only for me but for a
lot of other guys on our offense because we are dynamic, and we do have guys that present that. I like

how it changes week in and week out based off of what the defense gives us. Like I said, definitely
looking forward to building on that in the back half of the season.”
(On if young players have to learn how to use a bye week not just to rest their bodies but also to
improve) “I definitely think that you have to learn how to treat it. It also depends on your situation. The
veterans and some of the guys that have been playing all season are going to treat it a little differently
than a guy who’s maybe on practice squad or trying to become active. I know some of those young guys
had great work today, and they’ll get some great work tomorrow, and be able to get some live reps and
the stuff that we’ve been doing. For us veterans and those who have been out there playing, I think it’s
really important to give your body and mind rest, get away from the building, just kind of unplug for a
little bit, obviously keeping our goals in the back of your mind and think about what you can do better
for yourself personally to help the team get better in the back half of the season. I’m a firm believer that
it’s really important to just kind of get away from the building and just unplug, because seven games is a
lot more games. We’ve got about two months to go, and we all have to be at our best physically and
mentally.”
(On how he unplugs) “I’m fine to go try to find a place to go play some golf and get away with my
fiancée, just spend some time with the family and just unplug, turn my phone off and do some things
that I enjoy. We love going down by the water, and I love playing golf, so just doing that. I’m sure a lot of
other guys will be doing the same, either going home or whatnot, but I’m definitely looking forward to
it.”
(On if his fiancée plays golf) “No, she doesn’t, but she’s a good supporter.”
(On how QB Trevor Lawrence is better now than at the beginning of the season) “I think it just comes
with maturity and I think also just the feel for the system in general. I think we’re all kind of getting
there, really knowing the ins and outs of the system, what works, what doesn’t work, you’re starting to
see a common occurrence. We’re 10 games in, so you’re able to see how defenses are playing us and
just some of the tendencies and different blitzes and coverages and whatnot. Last week, and even
Sunday against the Chiefs, there were some times when Trevor was checking some things concept-wise,
individual routes, moving the protection up front to get some things that he likes, and that’s what you
like to see. Oftentimes, younger quarterbacks, especially in a new system, the first couple weeks you’re
just calling the play that’s called in the huddle. As you mature, and you look at some of the guys that are
veterans that have been in a system for a while, if they don’t like the play that’s called, and based on the
look when you break the huddle, they’re able to get to a play that they feel comfortable with and that
they like, and more times than not, that play is going to be executed at a high level because that’s what
they’re comfortable with, they can see it, and they can play fast. It’s one of the areas that I’ve seen from
him that’s been really encouraging, just putting everybody out in the right spots to go out and succeed
on that play.”
(On his reaction when he saw the new of the trade for WR Calvin Ridley) “Calvin is a guy that I’ve known
for a while. We’re the same high school graduation class and met along the camp circuit then and played
against him while he was at Alabama. He was one of the top guys drafted in that 2018 class, so obviously
an amazing player, amazing route runner, great dude as well, so really excited to be able to get him in
the building. I think he’s going to be a big piece for us and the development of the offense. Like I said,
excited to get him in here.”

(On what stands out to him the most from his first year here in Jacksonville) “I think number one, just
the type of people that we have in this building, in this locker room, on our staff. These guys are
resilient. Doug (Head Coach Doug Pederson) says it best, we’re all hand-picked to be here. You see the
commonalities between everybody. High character guys, guys that go out and play for one another,
tough, smart football players. When you bring around the same kind of guy you’re kind of looking for,
you know you’re building something special. I know right now the season hasn’t really gone the way we
want it to, but you don’t really feel anybody giving up or kind of cashing it in, everybody’s still looking
forward to what’s in front of us, and those are the type of people you want to be around, you want to
go to work with, because it is a long season. The NFL is hard. It’s hard to win football games, but we’re
here to produce championship-level football. It’s all about believing that we can be the best. I think
that’s my favorite part so far about being here is just being a part of a special group.”
(On what gives him the most hope that they are close to getting things turned around) “I think as a
group, and I can only feel like I can speak for the offense, but just our progress and when we meet as a
group and we go over practice and we sit there nights before the games and just our mentality. Looking
back on stuff that we’ve done earlier in the year to where we are now, you look how far we’ve
progressed. Maybe we haven’t won as many games as we have wanted to, but we are getting better. I
can confidently say that we are getting better. It’s so close. We’ve just got to keep working. I know
offensively we’re a talented group. We have the right guys in that room, so we’re going to keep on
getting better and keep on making plays.”
