Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp: Jacksonville stumbles in extra-inning defeat in Charlotte

Madero throws five perfect innings in 4-3 loss

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Jacksonville starter Luis Madero worked 5.0 perfect innings on Sunday, but the Charlotte Knight rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the Jumbo Shrimp 4-3 in 10 innings in Sunday’s finale from Truist Field.

Madero was pulled with the Jumbo Shrimp (43-34) ahead 3-0 after his five innings, with the right-hander striking out a pair. In the sixth, Nate Nolan cranked a home run for Charlotte’s (28-49) first hit of the game. After a ground out, two walks sandwiched around an error loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed Matt Reynolds to score to pull the Knights within 3-2.

A leadoff homer by Reynolds in the eighth tied the score at three.

After Jacksonville failed to score in the top of the 10th, Nolan started the bottom of the frame of second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Marco Hernandez then hit a sacrifice fly to win it for the Knights.

The Jumbo Shrimp opened up the game’s scoring in the second inning. Zack Zehner singled and Lorenzo Quintana doubled to start the frame. Payton Henry cashed in an RBI ground out in his first Jumbo Shrimp at-bat for the game’s first run. Tristan Pompey followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

With the same score, Devin Hairston led off the sixth with a triple before scoring on Monte Harrison’s RBI base hit, which widened the gap to 3-0.
