Week 5 Postgame Notes

Jacksonville fell to 1-4 after a 30-14 loss to Houston and will return home to host Detroit at TIAA Bank Field on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET. 

Head Coach Doug Marrone will be available to media at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow via Microsoft Teams.  

GARDNER’S GAME: QB Gardner Minshew II threw for 300 yards for the third time this season, completing 31 of 49 passes for 301 yards, a 94.0 passer rating and two TDs. Minshew’s 31 completions marked the fourth consecutive game he’s completed at least 25 passes, which extended his franchise record, and his 10 TDs through five games are tied for the most through Week 5 in Jaguars history. He has thrown multiple TD passes in five of seven career divisional games. 

Minshewhas had a passer rating of at least 90.0 in 12 of 19 career games, including five of his last six games. He joins Patrick MahomesDak PrescottDeshaun WatsonRussell Wilson and Robert Griffin III as the only players with at least 12 games with a passer rating of 90-plus in their first 19 career appearances. He has posted a passer rating of 90-plus in six of seven career divisional matchups, including four consecutive games. 

Additionally, Minshew did not throw an INT and joins Dan Marino and Nick Foles as the only players in NFL history to throw for at least 29 TD passes with 11-or-fewer INTs through 19 career games. 

He completed 13 consecutive passes during the first and second quarter, which was the fourth-longest streak of consecutive pass completions in franchise history. 

COLE FOR 6: WR Keelan Cole made his third TD reception of the season and the 10th TD of his career on a 13-yard strike from QB Gardner Minshew II. Minshew was 8 for 8 passing on the team’s 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Cole is the second undrafted Jaguars player (WR Allen Hurns – 21) to total double-digit receiving TDs. Through five games, Cole has caught 21 passes for 219 yards and three TDs.  

TEXAS TOUCHDOWN: Rookie WR Collin Johnson, a fifth-round pick out of Texas, scored the first TD of his career on a 4-yard reception on fourth-and-goal to bring the Jaguars within one score. Johnson became the third rookie to score this season for the Jaguars, marking the first time in franchise history the Jaguars have had three rookies score in the first five weeks of a season.  

WELCOME BACK, WILSON: In his first game returning from Jacksonville’s reserve/injured list, S Jarrod Wilson got the third INT of his career and returned it for 48 yards. Wilson started at free safety for the Jaguars and finished with three tackles. 

SWISS ARMY SHENAULT: Rookie WR Laviska Shenault Jr. caught a team-high seven passes for 79 yards in today’s game. He now joins Brandin Cooks as the only NFL wide receivers over the last 25 seasons to gain at least 200 receiving yards and at least 50 rushing yards through five career games. 

JONES WITH THE TAKEAWAY: CB Sidney Jones IV recorded the third pick of his career and first INT as a Jaguar when he intercepted QB Deshaun Watson in the second quarter after DL Dawuane Smoot pressured Watson. Jones finished with three tackles and a career-high four passes defensed, becoming the only Jaguars player with four passes defensed over the last three seasons. 

RUMBLING ROBINSON: RB James Robinson finished with 70 scrimmage yards (48 rushing, 22 receiving), marking his fifth consecutive game with at least 50 scrimmage yards. Robinson, who has been the Jaguars’ leading rusher in all five games, joins former Browns RB Kevin Mack (1985) as the only undrafted players in NFL history to total at least 500 scrimmage yards through five career games. Through five weeks, Robinson has a team-high 516 scrimmage yards. 

COOKE’S CORNER: P Logan Cooke placed all three of his punts inside the 20, including two punts inside the 10. Cooke has placed 65 punts inside the 20 in his career, ranking fifth in franchise history. 

SMOOT WITH THE SACK: On the final play of the first quarter, fourth-year DE Dawuane Smoot brought down Texans QB Deshaun Watson for a 2-yard loss. The sack marked Smoot’s first of the season and the seventh of his career.
