Hughes & Smylek Highlight Lynn Swimming All-SSC Selections

Melbourne, Fla. – Lynn University’s Sarah Hughes and Karolina Smylek have been named All-Sunshine State Conference for swimming, as announced by the league office on Friday afternoon.  Hughes, a first team honoree, collects her third All-SSC selection while Smylek earns her first nod with a second team selection.

Hughes joins some rare company as she becomes just the second swimmer in program history to be a two-time first team pick (Rebecca Matthews, 2015-16).    She also garnered second team accolades in her first season with the Blue and White to become the third swimmer to be a three-time All-SSC selection (Thalie Carmigniani, 2013-16 and Catalina Berraud-Galea, 2016-18).

The Southampton, England, product receives recognition after a stellar SSC Championship in which she won four individual medals and one relay, joining Matthews as the only swimmers in program history to accomplish that feat.  Her seven career individual medals is second only to Matthews as well.

Hughes set personal-record times in the 100 & 200 breaststroke and 200 & 400 individual medley and qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship in each event.

Smylek burst onto the scene and will be a swimmer to be reckoned with over the next three years.  She became the first swimmer in program history to medal in the 100 backstroke and the first to earn medals for both the 100 & 200 back.  She is the second freshman at Lynn to medal in a relay (Tieri Erasito – 2014) and joins Carmigniani and Berraud-Galea as the only swimmers from Lynn to garner All-SSC recognition as a freshman.

At the SSC Championship, she set a program record in the 100 back while her 200 back time of 2:00.98 is second only to Carmigniani.  She also joins Carmigniani and Berraud-Galea as the only Fighting Knight freshmen to win two medals at the SSC Championship.

Lynn now has at least two All-SSC honorees in each of the past five years with 13 selections in total.

Voting for the all-conference awards was conducted among the Sunshine State Conference women’s swimming coaches. Coach of the Year, Swimmer of the Year and Freshman of the Year will be voted on by league coaches following the NCAA Division II championship.

The duo will be joined by Berraud-Galea, Samar Khacha, Laia Coma and Clara Monges at the NCAA Division II National Championship, March 13-16, in Indianapolis, Ind.
