ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (September 17, 2020) – Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) returns to competition this weekend as guests of the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association (VSCDA) at the Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival (ELVF) XXXV, September 18 – 20, and one racing family with Wisconsin roots is making the most of the opportunity.

Five members representing three generations of the Treffert family will compete together for the first time in vintage and historic competition this weekend at Road America. This fast-lane family is led by patriarch Bill Treffert, 76, who will be joined on track by his son, Todd Treffert, and daughter, Dawn Myers, and his grandsons Andrew Myers and Benjamin Myers, Dawn’s sons.

“It has been a family affair for years, but now it’s exciting to add my nephews to this event,” Todd Treffert said. “My Dad started racing 20 years ago, I started five or six years after him, and my sister started a couple years after me. Now my nephews are expanding into the vintage world with us for their first event at Road America with HSR and the VSCDA.”

Bill Treffert races this weekend in his open-top 1960 No. 24 Chevrolet Corvette (pictured below) while his grandsons will co-drive a 1990 No. 570 Chevrolet Corvette.

Dawn Myers competes in her 1969 No. 52 Porsche 911S (pictured below) while Todd Treffert – the reigning HSR Driver of the Year – wheels his 1974 No. 14 Porsche 911 IROC (pictured at top) and 2000 No. 12 Nissan GT-R (pictured at bottom).

The family is originally from Wisconsin, but some members have branched out to Florida as a primary or secondary place to live in recent years.

“We are from Wisconsin, that’s where I grew up, but we are now primarily Florida based,” Todd Treffert said. “I moved to Sarasota eight or nine years ago. My sister and parents both have places in Naples, but they split time in Wisconsin. My parents have a place in Elkhart Lake actually now, and my sister lives in Wauwatosa just outside of Milwaukee.”

Andrew, 30, and Ben, 27, who also list Wauwatosa as their hometown on the event entry list, make their historic and vintage competition debuts this weekend but have plenty of laps and experience in road racing competition.

“We have been racing as a family in the ChampCar Endurance Series for a few years now,” Todd Treffert said. “We don’t do a lot of races but try to run in the 24 hours at VIRginia International Raceway every year. We first started at Road Atlanta in 2014 and it has been a good way to get my nephews some experience. They are now ready for vintage and historic competition.”

Bill Treffert works on his own Corvette and will likely help his grandsons wrench on their 30-year-old 1990 Vette, which is also 30 years newer than their grandfather’s 1960 model.

Todd Treffert and Dawn Myers have their cars prepared by Brady Refenning and the 901 Shop.

“I actually bought this Porsche from Brady after racing against him in the car many times,” Todd Treffert said. “I put in the engine and transmission from my black IROC, which is being rebuilt, and the new car looks just like it but is blue in color.”

The VSCDA Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival XXXV is HSR’s first circuit race event of 2020 following a lengthy delay as part of the motorsport’s industries across the board pause in the fight against COVID-19.

The guest appearance at the 35th running of one of VSCDA’s premier events will see HSR competitors from all classes placed in existing and appropriate VSCDA run groups. All HSR cars will be run within their existing rules packages and compete for individual HSR honors in each race. A variety of ticket options for the event are available at www.roadamerica.com.
