Hollywood Police officer killed in the line of duty

At approximately 10:30 October 17th, 2021 Officers with the Hollywood Police Department were called out to the 4000 block of North Hills Drive.

Officers responded to the scene and came into contact with a suspect, and an altercation took place. During the altercation with the suspect, Officer Yandy Chirino was shot. Officers on scene immediately began rendering aid to Officer Chirino. He was transported in a police vehicle to Memorial Regional, where he later died from his injuries.

Officer Chirino was 28-years-old and had been with the Hollywood Police Department since 2017. In the short time he was with our Department, he was recognized multiple times for his outstanding work ethic. He received five commendations and was Officer of the Month for June 2020. This is such a devastating loss for the Hollywood Police Department. Officer Chirino gave his life honorably and without hesitation, protecting those in our community.

Officers on scene detained the suspect, Jason Banegas, who was born on November 9th, 2002. Banegas will be charged with armed burglary, battery on a law enforcement officer, carrying a concealed firearm violation, grand theft of a fire arm, resisting with violence and first degree murder, according to the Hollywood Police Department.
