#HLMBB Weekly Notebook – January 8

INDIANAPOLIS – Week 3 of the #HLMBB season is upon us with Wright State on top of the standings at 4-0, while Northern Kentucky heads to the Windy City to take on UIC on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. ET in the next #FridayisHLMBB contest.

#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES

• The Norse boast the best scoring defense in the HL at 65.6 points per game as they rank 12th in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just 26.9 percent from deep. 

• Tarkus Ferguson continues to do a little bit of everything for the Flames leading the team in points, assists blocks, steals and is second in rebounding. He leads the HL with 4.8 assists per game.

• Wright State moved up to No. 11 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll after as the Raiders remain undefeated in HL play and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak.

• The Raiders are 4-0 to start #HLMBB play and have been dominant so far this season. In HL play they rank tops in scoring, rebounding and 3-point field goal percentage. Nationally, WSU is 14th in the country in scoring offense with 81.6 points per game and 20th in rebounds per game at 41.2

• Preseason Player of the Year Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy continues to lead the HL in scoring and ranks third in the NCAA as he is averaging 24.9 points per game. In addition, he is top 50 in the country in free throw percentage (91.6), 3-pointers per game (3.40) and total steals (30).

• Youngstown State continues to hit the offensive glass as the Penguins are 23rd in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game with 13.2 and 55th in total rebounds per game at 39.5. Naz Bohannon is leading the charge on the glass grabbing 3.9 offensive boards per game, 12th in the NCAA.

• Bohannon and IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss are tied for the most double-doubles in League play with three after the first two weeks. Bohannon is averaging 17.0 points and 12.0 rebounds in HL play, while Goss leads with 15.5 boards and is adding 13.3 points.

• The Vikings picked up their second straight Horizon League win and improved the League record to 2-1, which marks Cleveland State’s best league start since the 2014-15 season. CSU is shooting 51.8 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from long range in three #HLMBB games.

• Milwaukee went undefeated last week with a buzzer beater by Te’Jon Lucas to give the Panthers a 64-62 win over UIC. Lucas is averaging 14.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game for MKE. 

• Amari Davis of Green Bay is a five-time winner of the #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honor and ranks in the top 10 nationally among freshmen at 15.5 points per game and leads the HL shooting 53.4 percent from the floor.

• The Phoenix continue to be one of the best offensive teams in the country as they are 10th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 82.0 points per game, while also ranking 13th in assists per game at 17.1 and shooting 37.6 percent from behind the arc to rank 31st in the NCAA.

• The HL had four players tabbed on the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List as Davis, Oakland’s Xavier Hill-Mais, Loudon Love of Wright State and Northern Kentucky’s Jalen Tate were tabbed on the list. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player.

#HLMBB PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Torrey Patton | Cleveland State | Junior | Guard | Dayton, Ohio
Patton led the Vikings to an 82-74 victory over Youngstown State as he scored a career-high 25 points, grabbed a career-high eight rebounds and handed out a career-high six assists. Patton was 9-of-12 from the floor, 2-of-2 from the 3-point line and 5-of-8 from the foul line. Cleveland State improved to 2-1 in league play, which marks the Vikings best start in conference play since the 2014-15 season. The junior currently ranks second in Horizon League play in scoring (20.3) and field goal percentage (.632).

Amari Davis | Green Bay | Freshman | Guard | Trotwood, Ohio
Davis picks up his fifth Freshman of the Week honor after leading the Phoenix with a game-high 21 points in Green Bay’s convincing 85-71 win over UIC at the Resch Center, also grabbing five rebounds. Davis came back on Sunday to score 10 points against IUPUI, averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on the week. He continues to lead GB in scoring with 15.5 points per contest and has three 20-plus point efforts this season, including double-figure scoring games in 14 of 17 games this season.
