#HLMBB Weekly Notebook – February 12

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time in team history, Wright State has received votes in the Associated Press College basketball poll. We now head into Week 8 of conference play and only 20 days remain before the Horizon League Basketball Championships begin.

#HLMBB NEWS & NOTES

• Wright State has received votes in The Associated Press college basketball poll for the first time in program history.  With an overall record of 21-5 this season, the Raiders are one of the few teams in the country with 21 or more victories.

• WSU comes in at No. 12 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll with Northern Kentucky receiving votes.

• The Raiders are 11-2 to in #HLMBB play and have been dominant so far this season. In HL play they rank tops in scoring, rebounding and 3-point field goal percentage. Nationally, WSU is fourth in the country in scoring offense with 81.8 points per game and tenth  in rebounds per game at 40.62.

• The Norse boast the best scoring defense in the HL at 65.3 points per game as they rank 12 in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just 28.6 percent from deep. 

• Amari Davis of Green Bay is an eight-time winner of the #HLMBB Freshman of the Week honor and is now tied for the most in conference history. Davis ranks seventh in the League in scoring with an average of 15.8 points per game and is second in the HL shooting 50.9 percent from the floor.

• Preseason Player of the Year Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy continues to lead the HL in scoring and ranks sixth in the NCAA as he is averaging 23 points per game. In addition, he is 11 in the country in free throw percentage (90.2) and top-10 in the country in 3-pointers per game (3.38).

• Youngstown State continues to hit the offensive glass as the Penguins are fifth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game with 14.04 and 18th in total rebounds per game at 40.00. Naz Bohannon is leading the charge on the glass grabbing 8.5 offensive boards per game.

• The Phoenix continue to be one of the best offensive teams in the country as they are 9th in the NCAA in scoring offense at 10 points per game, while also ranking 11th in assists per game at 16.7, 16th in assist-to-turnover ratio and shooting 37 percent from behind the arc.

• Milwaukee Player of the Week Te’Jon Lucas ranks ninth in the Horizon League in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game. The Panthers boast the third best free throw percentage in the league

• Tarkus Ferguson continues to do a little bit of everything for UIC leading the team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals. He leads the HL with 4.9 assists per game.

• IUPUI’s Elyjah Goss leads the League in rebounding, averaging 11.7 a game, which ranks 11th in the NCAA and is tied for 28th in the nation in double doubles with ten. Marcus Burk (20.7) and Jaylen Minnett (16.7) are the second and third highest scorers in the Horizon League.

• Oakland’s Xavier Hill-Mais leads his team in scoring (15.6), rebounding (7.6) and leads the League with a field goal percentage of 51.3 percent.

Te’Jon Lucas | Milwaukee | Redshirt Junior | Guard | Milwaukee, Wis.

Te’Jon Lucas led Milwaukee to a 2-0 week by averaging 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. He shot 50 percent from the field (15-of-30), including 54 percent (7-of-13) from 3-point range and 82 percent (9-of-11) from the line. Following a 15-point effort in the win against the Flames Thursday, Lucas carried the Panthers to the 80-79 OT victory Saturday at IUPUI. He tied his career-high with 31 points, which included the game-winner in overtime with just 7.0 seconds left on the clock. He also added a career-high 12 rebounds for his second career double-double. He netted 16 of his 31 points in the final 7:30 of regulation and the 5-minute OT period, playing that entire span with 4 fouls.

Amari Davis | Green Bay | Freshman | Guard | Trotwood, Ohio

Davis’ 22 points helped Green Bay take down IUPUI for the first time since they joined the Horizon League, going 9-for-18 from the field and grabbing six rebounds. Davis played 30 minutes and went 4-for-4 at the free throw line, helping the Phoenix score 90 plus points for the second-straight game. The freshman scored 7 points in a loss at UIC, and is still second on the team in scoring with 15.8 PPG. With his 22 points at IUPUI, Davis now has seven games this season with 20 or more points, and ranks second in the HL in field goal percentage at 50.9 percent.
