Guthrie Named Associate Head Coach of UAB Softball

BIRMINGHAM – UAB softball’s Joe Guthrie has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach, as announced by head coach Jimmy Kolaitis Friday afternoon.

“I am very fortunate to have the staff that I work with every day,” said Kolaitis. “Coach Guthrie has been a big piece to what we do at UAB. He is one of the hardest working coaches in the country and I am glad he is on our side.”

Guthrie joined the UAB softball staff last season as part of Kolaitis’ first season in Birmingham. Prior to UAB, Guthrie spent one season at Louisiana as an assistant coach where he helped lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to an NCAA tournament appearance and a second-place finish in the Sun Belt. Guthrie spent time in the National Pro Fastpitch league as part of the Scrapyard Dogs coaching staff in 2017 alongside Kolaitis. He served as an assistant at Penn State from 2014-16 after six seasons as head coach and assistant athletics director at Marion Military Institute.

“I would like to thank Jimmy Kolaitis for having faith in me as a coach,” said Guthrie. “He is an outstanding coach and is building our program the right way. I would also like to thank all the UAB softball players, Athletic Director, Mark Ingram and Deputy AD, Dan Carlson for their support. Lastly, without our outstanding assistant coach Courtnay Foster I would not have this honor. I am very excited and humbled.”

The Blazers were picked to finish fifth in the preseason conference polls after an eighth place finish a season ago.
