Groundbreaking for major project at Haulover Park

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County District 4 Commissioner Sally A. Heyman and Miami-Dade County Parks Director Maria I. Nardi gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for a landmark revitalization project for the boat ramp parking lot at Haulover Park at 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami 33154. The project aims to meet the increasing demand for recreational water access in Miami-Dade County, including improving public access to Haulover Marina, and to strengthen the park’s resiliency to stormwater surge and sea level rise. Construction is expected to be completed by June 2023.

The improvement plan is aligned with Sea Level Rise recommendations and includes replacing and elevating the existing boat ramps and existing docks with new concrete floating docks; elevating the existing parking lot, access and staging roads, and primary and secondary overflow parking lots by a height of three feet; and new entry points, an access road, drainage, sewer line, lighting, landscaping, and signage.  In addition, FDOT will construct a new intersection and signalization for the entrance.

Haulover Park is a nature-based Heritage Park and Marina. Bounded by the city of Sunny Isles Beach on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Baker’s Haulover Cut on the south, and Biscayne Bay on the west, the 256-acre park with 1.4 miles of beach front, was acquired in 1935 and was then the County’s fourth major park. Today, the marina and boat ramps provide a launch point for the thousands of recreational boaters that cruise the Intracoastal Waterway to explore Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

The cost to complete the new development is approximately $12.6 million.  Funding will be provided by Florida Inland Navigational District (FIND).

“Haulover Park is one of the most popular boating access points in Miami-Dade County and these improvements will greatly expand capacity and access to our county’s waters,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “This is one more step toward fulfilling our County’s open space master plan and our vision of renewed and beautiful green spaces across our county, one in which all residents have access to safe and beautiful places to boat, fish, swim, paddle board, sail, canoe, kayak or walk a beautiful shoreline.”

“Finally, something to get excited about — our Marina Boat Ramp and parking improvements are happening at Haulover Park,” said Commissioner Heyman.  “These essential boating amenities will increase access and safety measures for boaters at Haulover.”

“Miami-Dade Parks is making great strides in rejuvenating and preserving the history, beauty and recreation appeal of our iconic waterfront parks and marinas and making these more resilient to sea level rise and accessible to all,” said Director Nardi.
