Gators Gear Up for NCAA Regional Play in Cle Elum

The Gators will tee it up at 11 a.m. ET in the first round of competition, slated for Monday, May 17.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida men’s golf team hits the West Coast to compete in the NCAA Cle Elum Regional, slated to begin on Monday, May 17 and continue through Wednesday, May 19.

Format: Regional play will feature three rounds of stroke play scheduled over three days. Tee times are based on team finishes at the conclusion of each day, with the Gators scheduled to tee it up at 11 a.m. ET in the first round. At the conclusion of play, the top five teams from each of the six designated regional sites, as well as the top individual finisher not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championship at Greyhawk Golf Club.

Course Information: The Gators are competing at the par-71, 7,069-yard Tumble Creek Golf Course. Laid out above the Cle Elum River, the 18-hole mountain course is situated next to Suncadia Resort. Designed by Tom Doak, the course is renown for its minimalistic construction that barely moved the earth in each hole design except for the 450-yard 18th hole, which cuts down the sunny side of the Cascades Mountain Range. Opened in 2005, the course has been home to many U.S. Open qualifying tournaments.

Tournament History: Florida has earned a bid to the NCAA Regional Championship 31 of 32 times, while also claiming five team championships and six individual championships. Andy Zhang is the most recent Gators golfer to clinch the individual medal, doing so in 2018 alongside Florida’s team title.

Last Time Out: In their last tournament, the Gators competed at the SEC Championships. Hosted in St. Simons Island, Florida had a shorter-than-expected run after narrowly missing the top-eight cut to advance to match play.

Freshman Joe Pagdin posted three superb rounds and finished the stroke play event tied for seventh place, marking his third top-10 finish of the spring season.

Ricky Castillo turned in the next-best overall performance with a 3-over par overall score to tie for 12th individually to claim his third top-15 finish of the spring.

Tyler Wilkes carded his best round on the third day of competition and finished tied for 33rd on the individual leaderboard.

Yuxin Lin and Fred Biondi rounded out the Gators lineup.

SEC Honors: A trio of Gators received Southeastern Conference honors this past week, the league office announced.

Joe Pagdin headlined the group as he was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, while also earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Pagdin was astronomical in the Gators success this season. The freshman was a key member in all eight tournament lineups for Florida and recorded the best individual finish three times. Pagdin finished outside of the top-20 only twice in his inaugural season and claimed a team-high three top-10 finishes.

Tyler Wilkes joined Pagdin on the All-Freshman Team after a superb spring season that included three top-20 finishes. Wilkes best finish came at the LSU Invitational, where he shot 5-over par and tied for 15th individually, marking the Gators best individual performance of the tournament and subsequently earning Wilkes his first SEC Freshman of the Week honor.

Ricky Castillo was named a Second-Team All-SEC member after providing stability to the Gators lineup. Touting the lowest scoring average on the team, 71.38, the California native recorded six top-25 finishes. Eleven of his 24 total rounds were either even or under par, including a team-low 64 that he recorded during the third round of play at the Gators Invitational. The Gators would go on to win their home tournament for the second consecutive year.
