Gator Soccer Loses to Miami 1-0 OT

The day’s only goal came with 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime. UM’s Taylor Shell caught up with Maria Jakobsdottir’s through ball, hitting a right-footed shot from the penalty spot.

Florida outshot the Hurricanes 14-9, with several good looks in the second half. In the 59th minute, Nicole Vernis’ eight-yard shot was saved by UM’s Melissa Dagenais. Ten minutes later, Cameron Hall hit two shots, the first blocked and the second five seconds later saved by Dagenais. In the 86th minute, Florida was awarded a free kick. What UF’s Tony Amato Said:
On today’s match:
“I thought overall today we were good enough to win the game. Obviously when you get into extra time, it is just a play at time. One play ends the game and they found a way to do that so credit to them in extra time.

“We have to find a way to get a goal earlier in the game to switch things in our favor. We weren’t able to do that. There was a chance or two that we could have done that, but we didn’t. As the game wore on, it was going to come down to one moment and they found a way to get the moment there at the end of the first overtime.

“We have to get things solved, keep getting better, and find a way to build off some of the adversity of early season losses. The whole season is ahead of us. We’ll keep chipping away and we’ll be at a better place in a few weeks.” Florida Head Coach Tony Amato

On team’s opportunities after halftime:
“Thought we were a little more aggressive in the second half, which helped create some of those chances. We were hoping by having a volume of chances that would lead to goals. That final decision at the top of the box, whether it is someone stepping through the ball on a shot or getting on the end of a cross or getting in position to deliver a quality cross – we didn’t find that key moment.

“We’ll take a look at it. We’ve got to be more dynamic, more threatening and aggressive in those moments. And then with a bit of composure and some quality to tuck it in the back of the net. We are capable of doing that; we just have to get in those spots more often and put it in the back of the net.” Florida Head Coach Tony Amato

Next Up:
Florida is on the road next weekend to face two more in-state rivals. For the third consecutive Thursday, the Gator face a ranked team, this time No. 1 Florida State. Then UF makes its first trip to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday.
