Fort Lauderdale Commission holds meeting

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission approved several major items at a recent meeting.

The Commission adopted a resolution authorizing the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Navy League of the United States, Fort Lauderdale Council, Inc. that includes a City contribution of up to $250,000 for USS Fort Lauderdale commissioning activities that are expected to take place this summer. The USS Fort Lauderdale will support a wide range of operational missions including humanitarian relief efforts; providing medical, logistics, and air support; and coordinating and assessing damage with local government and relief crews.

The City Commission adopted a resolution approving the Parks, Recreation and Beaches Advisory Board’s recommendation for approval of 12 parks improvement projects, including 11 joint use parks within Broward County Public Schools: North Fork Elementary School/Park, Sunrise Middle School/Park, Stranahan High School/Park, Stephen Foster Elementary School/Park, Westwood Heights Elementary School/Park, Rock Island Elementary School/Park, Thurgood Marshall Elementary School/Park, Dillard 6-12 School/Park, Harbordale Elementary School/Park, Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School/Park, Sheridan Technical High School/Sunset Park, and George English Pickleball Courts. City staff along with the program manager will work to finalize the improvements for each site. Commissioner Steve Glassman said, “I am pleased that the City Commission restored total funding to all of these joint use parks in our city. It is important that what the voters voted on in the Parks Bond becomes a reality.”  

The City Commission approved a five-year agreement for watersports activities at George English Park with Blue Moon Outdoor Center LLC with an annual revenue amount of 25% of monthly gross concession receipts net of sales tax and capital improvements to the concession area of up to $75,000. Blue Moon Outdoor Center LLC, also known as Blue Moon Outdoor Adventures, has operated at George English Park since 2017 and offers both non-motorized and motorized personal watercraft.

The City Commission approved an interim agreement with RI Flamingo Holdings, LLC and IDE Americas, INC. for placing of a pilot plant at the Fiveash Water Treatment Plant to facilitate investigation, discovery, inspection, and testing of the Prospect Wellfields Property. Activities to be conducted include soil testing and boring, environmental studies, water quality studies, and surveying. The access granted through this interim agreement is the first step in developing a comprehensive agreement for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the City’s new water treatment facility.

On April 20, 2022, the City received an unsolicited proposal to develop, construct, operate, and maintain a full-service movie studio complex on city-owned property located at 1400 NW 31 Avenue. The project would bring film industry jobs and educational opportunities to the area. The City Commission approved a resolution providing notice of intent to enter into a comprehensive agreement for the project and notice of intent to accept other proposals for the same project.

On August 30, 2021, the City received an unsolicited proposal to develop, operate, and maintain a pickleball facility on the southwest portion of Snyder Park located at 3299 SW 4 Avenue. The City Commission approved a resolution providing notice of intent to enter into a Comprehensive Agreement for the project and notice of intent to accept other proposals for the same project..
