Florida Panthers Agree to Terms with Defenseman Marek Alscher

SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Marek Alscher on a three-year, entry-level contract commencing with the 2023-24 season.

“Marek has impressed our team with his on and off ice maturity, hard work and calculated preparation,” said Zito. “We like what his skill and size can bring to our defensive pipeline, and we look forward to his continued development within our system.”

Alscher, 18, has skated in 54 Western Hockey League (WHL) games with the Portland Winterhawks in 2022-23, producing 21 points (7-14-21) and a team-high 63 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 196-pound native of Slany, Czechia has played in 115 games with Portland from 2021-22 to 2022-23, amassing 37 points (14-23-37), a plus-16 rating and 111 penalty minutes.

Prior to his North American career, Alscher played for the Lahti Pelicans U16 and U18 clubs in Finland from 2019-20 to 2020-21. On the international stage, he represented his home country at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup where he notched one assist over four tournament games.

Alscher was originally selected by the Panthers in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft.
