Florida Atlantic Picks Up 10th Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team picked up its 10th win of 2023 by way of a Cammeo Presutti RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, downing the visiting Oakland Bears 2-1, on Thursday night.

While the win came in the final frame, all was made possible by an outstanding pitching performance by sophomore Gabby Sacco, who tossed her fourth complete game in five outings and picked up her fifth win in as many appearances.

GAME TWO

FAU put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third. Maddie Carlock ripped  a ball past a diving left fielder and hustled around the bases sliding into third for a triple. Carlock scored on a single by freshman third baseman Jesiana Mora. Sacco held that one run lead, pitching out of jams and keeping the Owls hopes alive through a scoreless four innings, but saw the game tied in the top of the fifth. She stranded one Oakland baserunner in the sixth and retired the side one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Riley Ennis hit the gap between left and center field for a standup double. She was lifted for pinch runner Abby Ota, who moved to third on an Oakland fielding error. With runners on first and third and no outs, the Owls’ lineup returned to the top of the order with three outs to score one. Cammeo Presutti drove the first pitch she saw to left sacrificing in Ota, giving FAU the 2-1 victory over Oakland.

NOTES/NOTABLES

  • The Owls had five hits in the game with Mora accounting for two, with a 2-for-3 and one RBI night
  • Becca Jones had a double, as did Ennis, and Carlock rounded out the Owl hitters with the triple
  • Sacco controlled the seven innings from the circle, scattered five hits, one earned run, five strikeouts opposed to no walks and moved to 6-2 on the year

GAME ONE

The 2023 Owl Classic opened on Thursday afternoon featuring Texas State and Winthrop with the Owls’ game soon following. Texas State scored its first run against FAU, and the only run they would need in the top of the second inning, a solo shot over the left field fence. Despite the Owls threatening, the 1-0 Texas State score would hold through the fourth with the Bobcats plating their second run of the game in the top of the fifth for the 2-0 final.

NOTES/NOTABLES

  • FAU matched Texas State in total hits, but was unable to string them together
  • Presutti, Mora, Caryssa Orland and Sommer Baker were each 1-for-3
  • Lynn Gardner tossed a complete game, struck out three, walked four and took the loss

NEXT UP

FAU will continue Owl Classic play throughout the weekend featuring Oakland, Penn, Winthrop and Illinois State.
