FIU News: Panthers Post Record GPA for 2019-20 Academic Year

MIAMI (Nov. 24, 2020) – Student-athletes at FIU continue to raise the bar in the classroom, as the athletic department posted a record-high 3.38 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year. The 3.38 GPA betters last year’s previous high of 3.28. 
 
“I want to thank Dr. Elizabeth Bejar and the entire SAAC staff, as well as our coaching staff,” Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia said. “Their commitment to academics ensured that the challenges presented by Covid-19 would not derail our continued goal to excel academically in all sports. I also want to thank all of our Panther student-athletes for their academic perseverance through the Covid-19 pandemic.”

FIU had 16 sport programs post above a 3.0 GPA, while an impressive six programs exceeded a 3.5 GPA. The swimming and diving program earned the highest GPA on campus, after posting a 3.82 for the year. 

Last semester, FIU student-athletes posted a conference-high 282 members on the C-USA honor roll (3.0 GPA or higher). The achievement marked the second-straight year FIU has led the conference in total honor roll members. The FIU women’s track program led the athletic department with 33 members on the honor roll list, with the football program boasting 30 to place second overall at FIU.
