FIU MBB News: Osaghae Named C-USA Defensive Player of the Year

DALLAS (March 10, 2020) – Following a monster senior season, FIU forward Osasumwen Osaghae received the coveted Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year award, the league announced on Tuesday. It is the first-ever C-USA superlative honor to be awarded to a Panther player in program history.

Osaghae leads the nation in total blocks (116) and swats per game this season (3.7). The Miami native paces the FIU squad with 8.1 rebounds and is fourth among league players in the category. The senior’s 3.1 offensive rebounds per outing also rank second in the conference. FIU’s all-time leading shot-blocker (246) tallied a career-high eight swats twice this season, while also leading the league with eight double-doubles for the 2019-20 season.

The senior was honored on Monday as well, with the Panther named to the All-Conference USA Second Team and C-USA All-Defensive Team.

The Panthers head to the C-USA Tournament scheduled from Wednesday, March 11 through Saturday, March 14, in Frisco, Texas. As the number five seed, FIU is set to play 12th–seeded Rice on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
