FIU FB News: Panthers Battle 49ers on Friday

MIAMI – (Oct. 6, 2021) – The FIU football team returns home to face Conference USA foe Charlotte on Friday, October 8, with kickoff from FIU Stadium slated for 7 p.m. ET.

The contest marks the first national TV game for the Panthers this season as the battle with the 49ers is set to air on CBS Sports Network. “Voice of the Panthers” AJ Ricketts can be heard on the Panthers’ new radio home Univision’s WQBA 1140 AM.

LEADING THE NATION
Quarterback Max Bortenschlager enters the conference clash first in the nation for passing yards per completion. The senior’s 18.24 yards ranks atop the standings with UTEP’s Gavin Hardison following the Panther quarterback with 17.51 yards. Also pacing the nation is wide receiver Tyrese Chambers, whose 27.71 yards per reception ranks first in the country.

LAST TIME OUT
FIU fell to Florida Atlantic 58-21 in Shula Bowl XX. Bortenschlager went 12 of 28 for 263 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Chambers posted two receptions for 79 yards including a 68 yard pass from Bortenschlager for a touchdown. On the ground, D’vonte Price saw most of the action with 16 carries for 39 yards. Defensively Josh Valentine-Turner tallied a team-best 11 tackles.

SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte enters the game at 3-2 on the season and 0-2 on the road. Both of the 49ers’ loses on the season have come on the road including, a 24-14 loss at Illinois last weekend.

Quarterback Chris Reynolds went 17-23 for 191 yards with two touchdowns and one interception at Illinois. The 49ers could only muster 263 total yards of offense against the Illini, while Illinois racked up 336 yards on the ground on the Charlotte defense.

The Panthers hold a perfect series record against the 49ers. FIU is 5-0 overall against Charlotte including a 48-23 victory in the last meeting during the 2019 season.
