First Place UAB Women’s Soccer Visits UTEP

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s soccer team looks to begin the Conference USA season with four straight wins for the first time since 1998 when it visits UTEP on Thursday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT) and 7 p.m. (MT).
 
UAB LATELY
UAB is on its longest winning streak since 2013. With the win over Florida Atlantic on Sept. 25, the Blazers have four straight matches dating back to Sept. 8. UAB’s undefeated streak is at five matches dating back to Sept. 4.
 
UTEP LATELY            
The Miners are coming off back-to-back shutout loses to WKU (9/22) and Charlotte (9/25). Prior to those setbacks, UTEP tied its three previous matches. The Miners last win was Sept. 9 against Incarnate Word.
 
THE SERIES VS. UTEP
In 17 matches, UTEP narrowly leads the series 7-6-4. The teams met once in the Conference USA Championship in 2009. The Blazers defeated UTEP 3-2 on penalty kicks to advance to the semifinal round.
 
LAST MATCH VS. UTEP
Lizzie Hill scored 56 seconds into the second overtime to give UAB a thrilling 2-1 victory over UTEP on Oct. 28, 2021.
 
COMMON OPPONENTS
UAB and UTEP have nine common opponents, all in C-USA.
 
THAT’S TWO FOR ASHA
On Sept. 27, Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga was the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. This is her second honor this season, as she took home the award on Aug. 17.
 
MOVING ON UP
The Blazers came in ranked No. 2 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Ranking South Region poll. UAB moved up an incredible six spots after wins over FIU and Florida Atlantic.
 
HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT  
UAB is fifth in the NCAA and first in C-USA with a .598 shot accuracy.

UAB TO THE AAC STARTING IN 2022-23
On Thurs., Oct. 21, American Athletic Conference officials announced that Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC. They will compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The UAB women’s soccer team will begin AAC play in the 2023 season.
