First Place UAB Women’s Soccer Returns Home to Face UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – The first place UAB women’s soccer team looks to remain undefeated in Conference USA play on Sunday when UTSA visits Birmingham. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

UAB LATELY
UAB (7-2-3, 4-0-1 C-USA), who is off its best league start in program history, is coming off a Texas roadtrip where they defeated UTEP 1-0 on Sept. 29 and tied North Texas on Nov. 2. The Blazers are currently in first place in C-USA with 13 points.

UTSA LATELY            
UTSA (6-3-3, 1-2-2 C-USA) has dropped its last two contests – a nonconference 1-0 loss at Houston on Oct. 2 and a 2-1 setback to LA Tech on Oct. 6.

THE SERIES VS. UTSA

In five matches, UAB leads the series 3-1-1. The Blazers are 2-1-1 at home since the series began in 2014.

LAST MATCH VS. UTSA

Morgan Halliwill got the equalizer in the 50th minute in UAB’s 1-1 draw at Park West Athletics Complex in San Antonio on Oct. 22, 2021.

UAB and UTSA have nine common opponents, all in C-USA.

THAT’S TWO FOR ASHA
On Sept. 27, Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga was the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. This is her second honor this season, as she took home the award on Aug. 17.

A KEEPER WORTH KEEPING

Eve Beyer was named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 4. In the Blazers’ 1-0 victory at UTEP on Sept. 29, the senior turned away three shots. She followed that with a five save performance on Oct. 2 – including a huge save with three seconds remaining in the match to preserve a 0-0 draw.

MOVING ON UP
The Blazers came in ranked at No. 1 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Ranking South Region poll. UAB moved up one spot from last week’s poll.

HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT  
UAB is sixth in the NCAA and first in C-USA with a .586 shot accuracy.

GIMME FIVE 
UAB’s five match winning streak from Sept. 8 to Sept. 29 was fourth longest in program history.

LUCKY SEVEN            

UAB’s current six match unbeaten streak ties the third longest in program history. During the 2020 season, played in the spring of 2021, the Blazers also went six games without a blemish. They also did this in 2003 and 2008. UAB went unbeaten in eight straight matches in 1998 and a school record nine straight matches in 2017.

UAB TO THE AAC STARTING IN 2022-23
On Thurs., Oct. 21, American Athletic Conference officials announced that Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice and Texas San Antonio will join UAB as new members in the AAC. They will compete against current AAC members East Carolina, Memphis, Navy, USF, SMU, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State. The UAB women’s soccer team will begin AAC play in the 2023 season.
