FB: 2022 C-USA All-Academic Team Announced (Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022)

DALLAS – Conference USA has named 11 football student-athletes to the 2022 C-USA Football All-Academic Team for excelling both on and off the field this season. Nine schools are represented on this year’s team, led by UAB and UTEP with a pair of selections apiece. Additionally, four student-athletes are previous honorees.

Charlotte graduate S Tank Robinson earned a starting role for the 49ers in each of his past two seasons since transferring from East Carolina but has battled injuries that has limited him to just four starts and six games. A member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2022, he owns a 3.80 GPA in Africana studies.

Florida Atlantic redshirt freshman WR Tony Johnson came to FAU on an academic scholarship and, after trying out for the football team, went on to catch 22 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. A member of the Dean’s List in every semester thus far, the Ocala, Fla., native boasts a 3.97 GPA as a pre-business major. He has seen action in every game, both on offense and special teams.

Louisiana Tech junior OL Abraham Delfin earns his third-straight All-Academic Team nod as a three-year starter with a 3.90 GPA in his MBA journey. Delfin graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering technology in May 2021 and is a five-time C-USA Academic Medalist and member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He has tallied 25 career starts and 52 career appearances for the Bulldogs.

North Texas senior DB Sean-Thomas Faulkner has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA in the MBA program since the fall of 2021 while starting in each of the Mean Green’s last 18 games dating back to last season. He ranks fourth on the team with 72 total tackles this season, and he also has three PBU and a fumble recovery. Faulkner racked up a season-high 12 tackles versus UAB on Nov. 12.

Rice graduate DL Trey Schuman repeats on the All-Academic Team with a 3.91 GPA while earning his MBA. A 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist, Schuman has twice been named Rice’s Football Scholar Athlete of the Year and is a four-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award. Schuman has also earned the C-USA Academic Medal and has been selected to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll on five occasions each. The Burleson, Texas, native set or tied career highs in sacks (four) and TFL (5). Schuman ranked second on the team with 20 pressures.

UAB redshirt junior PK Matt Quinn is a first-time All-Academic Team selection and has a 3.90 GPA in accounting. He was a recipient of a C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal last year. The Spanish Fort, Ala., native is 11-16 on field-goal attempts this season and is a perfect 37-37 on PAT. Quinn ranked third in C-USA with 11 made field goals in conference play.

UAB redshirt senior OL Sidney Wells, a starting right tackle with a 3.80 GPA in interdisciplinary studies, joins Quinn on the All-Academic Team for the first time as well. He has played a vital role on the Blazers’ line that was named to the Joe Moore Award Midseason Honor Roll and has paved the way for the nation’s sixth-best rushing offense (247.1).

UTEP redshirt senior WR/RB Reynaldo Flores adds an All-Academic Team selection to his resume, which includes 828 yards of total offense and six total touchdowns this season, along with a perfect 4.00 GPA as a mechanical engineering major. He is a five-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal and member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Flores carried the ball 38 times for 276 yards (7.3 YPC) for five touchdowns and hauled in 49 passes for 534 yards and a touchdown for the Miners this fall.

UTEP redshirt senior S Ty’Reke James makes it a pair of Miners on the All-Academic Team with a 3.87 GPA in leadership studies. He ranks fourth on the team with 52 total tackles and has added 2.5 TFL, an interception, two breakups, one hurry, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. James is a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was honored as a 2022 C-USA Academic Medalist.

UTSA senior OL Ahofitu Maka, who owns a 3.78 GPA in Management of Technology, picks up his second straight All-Academic Team nod. A 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy finalist, he is a two-time Academic All-District honoree and three-time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member. Maka is the starting center for a Roadrunner offense that leads C-USA and ranks in the top 15 nationally in points (38) and yards (489.6) per game.

WKU redshirt senior DE Juwuan Jones is a third-time All-Academic Team selection (2020, 2021) and boasts a 4.00 GPA in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration. Jones is a two-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In 13 games this season, he has compiled 39 tackles, three TFL, 1.5 sacks, two hurries and an interception and a fumble recovery.
