FAU Splits the Saturday Tilts

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team (2-6) saw two different outcomes Saturday evening, defeating Iowa State, 5-2, in the first game and falling to Ole Miss in game two, 11-0, but both games were clinched with a first inning grand slam.

It was senior Fayth Davis who did the honors for the Owls with her first homer of the 2021 season plating herself, Sara BerthiaumeSommer Baker, and Riley Ennis. The homer erased ISU’s 1-0 lead and the final score would give the Cyclones their first loss of the season (8-1). Junior Lynn Gardner started in the circle for FAU and had a season-high four strikeouts in the seven-inning gem.

The second game saw Mississippi freshman Ayslie Furbush hit her second grand slam in as many days, both versus FAU, to give Ole Miss all the runs they would need, and the Rebels (5-5) rolled to the five-inning win.
Joyce’s Thoughts
“We played very well in the first game and Lynn [Gardner] pitched exceptionally well,” said Joan Joyce, FAU’s head coach. “We hit the ball. I’m happy for Fayth [Davis] and we did a lot of things that were really, really good. That is the way we normally play and then we hit Ole Miss again. [We are] short on pitching right now and we got beat up.”
