FAU Men’s Basketball Downed by Charlotte, 70-68

CHARLOTTE, N. C. – (Jan. 23, 2020) – A hot-shooting second half performance by Charlotte was the culprit in the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team’s 70-68 loss to the 49ers on Thursday night.

The Owls (12-8, 4-3 Conference USA) got out to a hot start, making seven of their first eight shots, taking a 16-7 lead less than six minutes into the contest.  The lead grew to as many as 15 after Jailyn Ingram hit a 3-pointer at the 9:10 mark of the first half.

Charlotte (11-7, 5-2 C-USA) gradually chipped away at the deficit, pulling to within four at half, 34-30.

FAU began the second half quickly, needing just six minutes to take a 48-35 advantage. The Owls led by 14, 58-44, with seven and a half minutes to play when the 49ers began their comeback.    

Charlotte scored 13 unanswered points to pull to within one at 58-57 with at the 4:18 mark. The Owls responded with back-to-back layups to go up five, 62-57. It was the 49ers’ turn to rally, going on an 11-2 run to take a 68-64 lead with 24 seconds remaining. Karlis Silins made sandwiched buckets around a Charlotte free throw, cutting FAU’s deficit to one, 69-68, with nine seconds to play.

After a FAU foul, Charlotte made a free throw, making the score 70-68. The Owls had a chance at a game-winning 3-pointer, but the shot was off, allowing Charlotte to escape with the win.

  • Cornelius Taylor led the Owls with 16 points. He had three rebounds and two assists
  • Ingram posted 14 points and five rebounds
