“Falling Down”

“ME” MondayTM 3-9-2020

Can you ever remember being present when a child has fallen down? We tell them, “it’s okay. You’ll be okay”.

Have you ever heard someone say, ‘kids are resilient; don’t worry they bounce back easier than adults do’?

Whenever possible, as adults, we try to protect our children from getting hurt. When my kids would fall, the moment I would see the tears well up in their tiny little eyes, I would do my best to make them laugh instead. As they got a little older, laughter became a more frequent response.

When something happens for us as adults that we perceive as hurtful or bad, it can feel the same as suddenly falling down, can’t it? OUCH!!! Do we cry or do we laugh?

What if instead of giving into the tears, we search for the resilience we had in our youth?

As kids, we live protected, cared for, and loved by our family. What makes it difficult to maintain that feeling of security and flexibility as we become responsible for ourselves as adults?

Not very long ago, I became aware that my perspective of “falling down” might be skewed a bit. Instead of submitting to the everyday stressors that life seems to have an endless supply of, I realized it would be easier to reconnect with my childhood resilience. Now when I take a fall, aka- life happens, I focus on strengthening my resilience to the stressors, not trying to eliminate them.

Though it may not be possible to remove tension completely, it is possible to improve how we respond to pressure. It is so much easier now to ‘bounce back’, laugh, and move forward no matter how old I get. The innocence and resilience of my youth has become the strength and determination in my adult life to be more self-responsible. This transformed perspective enables me, as an adult, to protect, care for, and love myself in an even more empowered way than what I received as a child.

The next time you or someone you know “falls down”, maybe re-examining your viewpoint of the situation could help you “bounce back” in a wonderful new way you didn’t realize it could.

For today, “ME” MondayTM, make certain to, at the very least, schedule something special for yourself. Please send a message and share your thoughts; I look forward to hearing them.

Have you met the best version of yourself yet? Who would you see?

This is your now!
