NEW LOOK IN 2021
The Lions begin the 2021 calendar year in search of a new general
manager and head coach. With a fresh start on the horizon, Lions
leadership is prepared to put the right people in place for the
organization and knows how important these decisions will be.

Principal Owner and Chairman Sheila Ford Hamp on the football
changes coming in 2021: “To our loyal fans, we know this has been a
challenging year for everyone. Not having our fans around to support
our team has been difficult for all of us. Football this season has looked,
and felt, different, but it doesn’t change the fact that we play for you.
As I said in my opening press conference, I will do everything I can to
put a winning team on the field for our fans and the City of Detroit.
Unfortunately, we haven’t won enough over the last three seasons, and
our efforts to find the right leadership for the Lions begins (today).”

President & CEO Rod Wood on some of the traits he values and is
looking for in this search: “…We developed very specific criteria for
both positions that we’re looking for that are unique. Not totally unique,
but we think in some cases very unique to our situation. I won’t share
all of them with you, but I would say they focus on leadership, culture,
teamwork, awareness of each other’s strengths and weaknesses
and what we’re really looking for is a culture that is open, inclusive,
where everybody is pulling together as a team, and in one word,
communication is paramount and everybody is doing the right thing for
the Detroit Lions. So, the people that we’re looking for and the people
that we’re bringing in to interview, I think, exhibit those traits. As we
go through the interview process, hopefully we find people that we’re
100% confident will be the right people for the organization…”

FLOWERS OF THE FUTURE FOUNDATION
In April 2019, Flowers founded Flowers of the Future
Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the mission of
establishing community engagement, promoting physical
fitness, developing positive values and engaging in
philanthropic endeavors that aid in the overall betterment of
the youth in an effort to plant seeds that continuously grow
‘flowers for a better tomorrow.’ Currently the foundation
supports these efforts in Flowers’ hometown of Huntsville,
Ala. and Detroit, with plans to expand nationwide.
During his time with the Lions, the Flowers of the Future
Foundation has donated $15,000 to the Huntsville Inner
City Learning Center; hosted a Community Day with Trey
at the Detroit Ford Resource Engagement Center where
he provided backpacks, free haircuts and food; a Painting
with a Twist breast cancer awareness event with the
Sisters Network of Detroit; a holiday giveback event with
the Methodist Children’s Home Society in Detroit; as well as
started a scholarship for Huntsville high school students.
FLOWERS ON THE NOMINATION:
“Walter Payton was a great person, what he stood for. A
legacy lives on forever. It’s about the things that you do
with the time that you have on this Earth. I just hope that
a long time from now, people can remember the impact
that I had on their lives and the impact that I had on the
community. I hope that my foundation can continue to do
great things in the community. I just want to inspire, I want
to encourage because I know how important it is. This world,
in order to get better we have to inculcate the things that
we’ve experienced and the knowledge that we have on to the
youth, which leads them to be even better.”
DETROIT LIONS INSPIRE CHANGE
Flowers was vocal in the Detroit Lions Inspire Change Detroit
Votes initiative, including participating in the Lions Virtual
Voter Education and Registration Town Hall with Michigan
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and RISE to Vote, and
acting as moderator in the Players Coalition and Michigan
Voting “Your Vote Matters: How to Cast Yours in Michigan”
Virtual Town Hall with Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin
Gilchrist.
The defensive end was also a prominent voice when the team
canceled practice in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake
and other social injustices occurring in the country.
