FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University has announced the appointment of Assistant Athletic Director Yashiva Edwards as NSU’s Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee (ADID). Edwards will serve as the program’s primary contact and conduit for diversity and inclusion-related information pertaining to national, local and campus-level issues. In the ADID role, Edwards will serve as the primary contact for information related to initiatives, programming and resources from the NCAA, specifically from diversity-related committees and the office of inclusion, and may include scholarship and grant opportunities, professional development opportunities, as well as national trends and their impact on student-athletes.
“Yashiva will be a great representative for NSU as the Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee,” Director of Athletics Michael Mominey said. “This is a really significant and impactful role, not only on our campus, but on campuses across the country. I look forward to working alongside her to further promote the importance of education and to take action where and when needed, especially in today’s environment.”
Heading up the Sharks’ compliance efforts as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and NCAA Rules Education, Edwards joined the Nova Southeastern staff in Fall 2019. A senior staff member for the Sharks, Edwards spent the previous four years at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, after starting her career with the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis.
“First, I would like to thank President George Hanbury and AD Michael Mominey for appointing me as the NCAA Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee,” Edwards said. “I’m excited for the opportunity and also honored to help with such important work and in today’s times with such an important movement. I look forward to continuing to be a conduit for educating and a liaison for our student-athletes, staff, coaches and our Sharks community.”
Edwards brings not only her perspective as an administrator to the role, but also that of a former student-athlete. Before beginning her professional administration career, she was a six-time track and field All-American as a sprinter at Florida State University, an Olympic Trials competitor, an Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team selection and co-recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
Edwards will act as the liaison and work closely with not only the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, but also between campus entities to provide continued education relating to diversity and inclusivity to student-athletes, staff and coaches.
