Drivers in express lanes will soon face tolls

From David Volz

Drivers on the I-95 express lanes in northern Broward County will soon have to pay a toll to drive in the lanes. Construction has been taking years but the work on the express lanes is almost complete.

The lanes are on a nearly five mile section from Cypress Creek to Glades Road. The nightly road closures will end by drivers who want to use the express lanes will have pay cash or activate their SunPass. The $102 million project will be complete in November but the tolling will begin by early fall, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Drivers have been enjoying the express lanes which opened a few months ago. The state has been testing its electronic technology for tolling. The tolls will range from 50 cents to $10.50 depending on the time of day, the amount of traffic and the distance a driver travels in the express lanes.  These lanes are separated by dividers. The express lanes have been created so there will be a more steady flow of traffic.

Vickie Cartwright is selected as interim superintendent for Broward Schools

From David Volz

The Broward County School Board selected Vickie Cartwright, a former Orange County administrator and recent superintendent in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to be the interim superintendent for Broward Public schools.

Cartwright was chosen over Robert Schiller an experienced administrator who has led several school districts over the past 40 years. The School Board was divided and voted 5-4 for her.

Cartwright was pleased to be selected and said she was grateful and humbled to be given the opportunity to work with high quality people. She wanted to come to Florida.

She is age 50 and had worked 17 years with the Orange County School system where she became and associate superintendent. Cartwright will replace Robert Runcie who resigned following an arrest for perjury. His last day will be August 10. She will not be allowed to apply for the permanent superintendent position under School Board rules.

The next step in the process includes contract negotiations by School Board Chair Dr. Rosalind Osgood, beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 26. A Special School Board Meeting is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, July 28, when the terms of the negotiated contract will be presented to School Board members for approval.  Dr. Cartwright’s starting date will be determined during contract negotiation.

The School Board also selected the consulting firm, Ray and Associates, LLC, a firm specializing on school executive leadership searches, to conduct the search for the next Superintendent
